Noticed strange phenomena with magnets and my multimeter
    #4234262 -

Hi
I was experimenting with my multimeter. I had it set to read voltage.

When I tested my body for voltage (through my fingertips) it read -39. When I placed a magnet between my fingers I starting giving off 150!

Why would the magnet cause me to give off a current if I don't normally?

This is probably an explainable phenomena, can anybody enlighten me?

Google can.

Magnetics and electricity...

"Humans" would fit into that search string too.

Well that was slightly interesting.

the theory of magnetic induction has two inverse principles:

1current running through a wire will create a magnetic field.

2a wire passing through a magnetic field will create current.

so, i would hypothesize that, since you are a conductor of bioelectric energy, you acted as the "wire" and when you passed through the magnetic field, it created a small electrical impulse through you.

It's possible that the combination of two different metals (the magnet and the probe ends) created a small battery across your skin.

Voltaire's first battery was a stack of alternating metal discs separated by cloth soaked in saltwater. Two metals, separated by an electrolyte, create a battery.

So two metals (the probes and magnet) separated by an electrolyte (your salty, moist skin) may have create a small current flow.

I doubt it had much to do with induction, as there is ONLY a current flow WHILE the magnetic field is moving through the wire (or the wire through the magnetic field). If he was holding the magnet still and the probes still against his fingers, there would not have been a moving field to create a current flow.

Oh! Is your multimeter a digital or analogue meter?

Analogue meters can be sensitive to magnetic fields if you have the magnet close to the readout display (the dial uses a small magnet/voice coil to move).

Your body should not have a potential difference of 39 volts anywhere.

Are you sure that wasn't millivolts or something?

If your meter is set to read voltage, then you're not getting a current reading!! Which is it set to read, current or voltage? I suggest you learn how to use your meter.

Its digital.

And I tested for that! The magnets alone have no effect.

It takes a human and a magnet.?

Not a "human" and a "magnet", two different metals separated by an electrolyte.

In this case, the two metals could be the probe ends and the magnet. The electrolyte could be your skin.

-39 what? What units are you working in?

I'm leaning towards saying that if you try the same thing with an approximately equal sized chunk of non-magnetic metal, the same thing would happen.

I tried the experiment again and it produced no results at all.

Sorry for wasting your time dudes...

You will probably notice that you can change the readings quite a lot based upon how you take measurements, at least against a living human body. The pressure of the contacts, any sweat or dirt, etc, can all have a very large impact upon the accuracy and repeatability of your measurements.
