Is my multimeter broken?

When I set the multimeter to resistance, and touch the leads to metal, I get a reading.

But I want to see if some batteries I have are dead. I switched to the DC 10V setting (which is the lowest volt setting) and it never gets a reading when i put the leads on the ends of the batteries. I've tried smaller batteries to larger lead acid batteries.

Does it sound like it's not working, or am I doing something wrong?

I thought it was broken, but it seems odd that it works for resistance.

The meter itself is obviously working if it works for resistance. The switch may be bad, perhaps a connection. If you have any contact cleaner spray some on the contacts for your rotary switch if you can get to it. Sometimes the switch is encased and not even a tiny opening. Try other settings like 25v dc. Try your ac settings but you won't get an accurate reading on dc.

If you put the plug for the leads into different sockets for ac, dc and resistance, perhaps the dc volt socket is dirty or corroded. A little contact cleaner might help there.

The thing is is that it's straight out of the box. It's brand new.

I tried the other DC settings, still nothing. I tried the AC settings, as well as the amps... nothing.

Or there's a tab you have to remove.
Straight out of the box you should at least have a spare.

If you set it to resistance and measure live current by accident, it WILL blow the fuse.

Nope, you were right the first time. :lol:

I opened it up and the fuse was blown. There was a replacement so I put it in and it's working!
