Popcorn, to soak or not to soak

First of all I would like to thank you for your interest.
The subject at hand is soaking, since the popcorn is going to be boiled for an hour is soaking even necessary.
I have some popcorn jars that are prepped by soaking and then boiling. Followed by pcing.
I plan to make some jars without soaking and just plan to boil, followed by pcing.
If this has been done or you have some knowledge that would save me the time of doing this please contribute.
Thank you, ASD

Soak popcorn 24 hours to germinate what endospores you can. Only use popcorn if you have NO alternatives at is stinks as a spawn material, and in addition to that about a third of the people using it end up throwing away their jars either from bacteria or molds before they can get colonized. Rye, wbs or millet are all superior. RR

Do not descriminate corn
I know several people that have had 100% success with corn.
Jars usually colinize 100% within a week with pop corn
This is Popcorn, preped by soaking 24hours, simmering for an hour and then pcing at 15psi for one hour.
It was then spawned to peletized wheatstraw with now sterilization or anything.
The straw was poured into a rubbermaid, warm water was poured slightly below the straws level.
It was then allowed to expand for 10min and then mixed with 1 quart popcorn.
100% colinized in 2 weeks, due to temp and low spawn ratio.

I speak from experience. If your mind was already made up, why bother asking? In addition, since a jar of popcorn has less than 1/4 the mycelium of the same sized jar of rye or wbs, a week to colonize is horrible performance. Rye or wbs either one will colonize a quart in ten days to two weeks. RR

i'm just saying it is not that horrible. I have never experienced contams with corn. But I have experienced contams with wbs.
I do understand that WBS may have more myclem. I did not take that into account. I have just become accustomed to popcorn and wbs has given me nothing but problems.

I agree ASD, popcorn is all I use and I've never had a problem, although it does have much less myc (therefore less inoculation 'points' as wbs).
RR I always take your posts as the strait up facts and I also noticed alot of people posting negatively bout the 'corn., but the fact that WBS is usually easier and cheaper to get ahold of, and that it consists of much more surface area per volume, is enough information to conclude that you are right, when compared to other choices, it isnt the best......that is when we are talking about spawn material, which is going to be spawned to a bulk anyways, so we dont have to start arguing about potency differences in the spawn choices, which I also see way to much of on here :)
As for what to do with popcorn, theres 343242432 ways people do it....the way i've done my last 150 +/- 10 jars of it, was to SOAK for 24 hours, drain and rinse, SIMMER for 90 minutes, drain only no rinse, for 30 minutes (important), and PC at 15psi for 90 minutes. I also have PC'ed at 10 psi for 120 minutes with no problems. Draining time is important to get the water content correct before PCing.... You will find that 1 lb of popcorn gets you about 1 quart jar worth (after soaking and simmering, fully expanded)
Like I siad, someone might post saying im doing it all wrong, but its working for me, might not work for you, who knows!
Good luck!!!

I've been largely successful preparing popcorn by the following method:
Bring popcorn to boil, lower heat and simmer about 4 hours, until you can easily bite into a kernel but it's still quite chewy. Drain for 30 minutes or more, you want very little surface moisture. I'd drain for an hour when I was inoculating with about 10cc of LC. PC as per other grains, 15-18 psi 75-90 minutes. If there's standing water in the bottom of the jar it will probably fail.
But as others have noted, I've found that popcorn alone makes pretty lousy grain spawn, although when prepared properly mycelium will race through it - I had some pink oysters fully colonize popcorn jars in 5-6 days.
IME popcorn is a good additive to rye. At about 1/3-1/2 popcorn (vol.), I had full colonization about 2 days earlier than with all-rye jars prepared and inoculated at the same time.
