TennStud Weight vs. Volume

Can anyone, preferably a TennStud rep, give me an approximate volume:weight ratio of the basic dry substrate product?

I do not measure my substrate preparations by weight. I do it all by volume. I am interested in placing an order but the listed weights mean nothing to me. I need an approximate volume:weight ratio in order to comprehend how much I'm ordering for the $.

For example, a typical mycobag mix will contain 3 cups soaked and drained chopped straw, 2 cups of soaked and drained millet, 1 cup of dry manure, .5 cup of BRF, 1.5 cups of water and 4 cups of vermiculite. I could not begin to tell you what those respective volumes weigh, though.

The sooner I get a straight answer the sooner I place my order.

4 cups (bone dry & shredded) of my personal supply - uncompacted weights just shy of 1/2 lb.

That is not compacted.

Just by the fluffy scoops, with a 2 cup measure.

I would wager, his must weigh very near the same.

If it is as dry, as my supply?

The bag weights a couple grams, also.

On their FAQ it says that 5 lbs of pre-pasteurized poo fills a 12x12x4 container, so that would be 576 cubic inches.

5 pounds of dry poo would be like buying about 15 lbs of pre-pasteurized poo, so that would be 1728 cubic inches.  So 5 lbs of dry poo would be 25.71390307 quarts of poo.

1 quart of dry matter = 67.201 cubic inches
1 pint of dry matter = 33.36005 cubic inches
1 cup of dry matter = 16.80025 cubic inches

I recently had to do a lot of calculations with dry volumes when setting up my monotub. :grin:

A lot would depend on the compression ratio (if any), of the h/poo.

My guy can compress it into BRICKS.

Those, by volume weigh FAR more, than uncompressed h/poo, fresh out of the shredder.

Pictures seldom lie.

This is 4 cups of fluffy h/poo.

49/100 of a pound. Plus bag weight.

The point is that if he buys 5 lbs of dry poo, then it will be AT LEAST 24 quarts.

Tennstud's poo is either shredded or in pellet form. Besides, nobody in their right mind would compress their poo to the point of being brick-like inside the container in which they intend to grow.

The dry Tenn/Stud is shredded.

How compressed in the shipping box, is what would matter.

If you are going to figure volume, of substrate, as you would use it.

:rolleyes: Certainly, you would not add spawn to a compressed brick of h/poo.  :grin:

:foreheadslap: Crap, I figured out what was wrong w/ my calculations.

The Tennstud guy told me once that the FAQ was talking about WET weight, but when I plug in your numbers it seems that the FAQ must be talking about DRY weight. :shake:

So yeah, 5 lbs dry would be 8.5 to 10 quarts of poo. :crazy:

5 lb of dry shredded h/poo tightly compressed into a 8X18X4 inch bag.

Measured out uncompressed with a Pyrex measuring cup.

Equaled 52 uncompressed cups

1 cup = 0.25 quart.

52 X 4 = 13 quarts +/- a very small amount.

Just to clarify, I was basically trying to get a rough idea of how many mycobags can be formulated with 5lbs of TennStud product given that a single mycobag requires 1 cup of uncompressed, fluffy-style shredded poo.

The tray above measures 17X12X5 inches full of uncompacted machine shredded very dry h/poo.

If you are using 1 cup (uncompressed) per bag.

I would think you could do about 50, possibly 52.

Yeah, I am using a conservative estimate of 8 bags per lb in consideration of my order.

Suggestion to TennStud: Maybe include an approximate volume in your site listings.

Below is text of my own writing that I feel worth sharing with the community concerning the value fo this product:

why in god's name would pre-pasteurized substrate be 33% cheaper than the same substrate unpasteurized?

I think its because pasteurized subtrate have less poop and straw than dry stuff , pasteurized subatrate is moist so it weight more because it have water in it.
