Major PF tek flaw
    #588456 - 03/25/02 05:02 AM (20 years, 6 months ago)

I've read the posted pf tek, but it overlooks this common fact of physics. When you have a jar, and you raise the temperature, much of the air that was heated flows out. When the jar cools down again, air rushes into the jar to fullfill the pressure... Ever heard of vacum sealing? Same principles that your working with.

How could this be over looked? Am i just missing something? Why would people so smart completly ignore this far-from-pure air from going into the jar?

I'm looking for answers, or a better tek.

thats why you have a verm layer on top of your substrate or have polyfill stuffed in a hole in the top

A good idea would be to have a sterile room that is draft free, just spray alot of disinfectant and wipe with bleach water the walls and counters of a small room such as a bathroom and right when you take the pressure cooker off the stove you take it into that room that way you can lessen the chances of airborn contaminants being sucked into the vortex

Yeah, you leave the jars in the PC until its cool, and more importantly, you put an alcohol soaked cloth over the pressure cookers steam outlet so the cool air that is sucked into the PC is contaminent free.

thats why there is a layer of vermiculite!!!!! AND thats why you don't put the lid on rubber side down. beside you wouldn't want air tight jars anways the growth would be incredibley slow or non existant

its not about being perfect its about minium risks, pf tek is forgiving, thats why you can do it in an imperfect non-lab world and it still works great

You don't really need to let them cool down in the pot or whatever it is but it probably wouldn't hurt. Smart thinking though, you'll go a long way in this hobby with that kind of analytical thought process.

i just finished my first pf tek two days ago so im no expert , but if you leave the jars in the pot , i dont know about pressure cookers , but a regular pot , with the lid on and leave them in there untill they cool with the lid on then no air is going in or out , just a guess

was thinkibng about this last night,, realised it copuld be a possible reason why i get high contam rates in this house (dirty)

well i dunno if this will work but i can't see why not and would solve the problem.

would probs only work for saucepan sterlising

Get a sandwich bag, place over jar, get elastic band and secure bag over jar, make sure no air (or little as possible in jar.

now when you sterlise the jars, the air will flow out of the har, into the almost airtight bag, thus filling it with air, when is cooling, will suck the sterlise air back into the jar. Never comes into contact with unsterlise air.

Well just an idea. To use in a pressure cookeer, i suspose you could use oven bags, and use the tie tag around the jar.
