It's been about 4 days since I innoculated my jars and there's no colonization that I can see. I used aluminum foil instead of the canning lid. I placed another sheet of foil over the one with the four injection holes to prevent contamination...should I not have done this? Do the jars need access to air circulation?

re-read the pf tek and youll have the answer to all your questions.

normal

no, you should have followed the tek

>>Do the jars need access to air circulation?
No, if this was the case why should you have wasted your time sterilizing everything?

I use foil all the time and it works fine. I use 3 sheets however. Have a look at http://www.fungifun.org/ (I can't find the exact page, site seems down).

Hope that helps.

Yeah, Anno said the server was going to be down for several days. But I used his TEK and all 10 of my jars are on Day 11 of the grow, 2 are at 100% colonized with the remaining jars all over 80% colonized.

I think the foil lid structure allows just the right amount of air exchange...at least the Mazatapecs seem to like it! hehe

My advice is to find a TEK you want to use and stick to it exactly as that TEK describes. I followed Anno's TEK to the letter and I'm having 100% results.

Love & Light,

Boppity

You might be OK if you wiped your edges really really good, and put alot of vermiculite on top.

You're going to have to handle those jars carefully if you're going to handle them at all. Definitely leave the top layer of foil on.

Next time use the lid if at all possible.

Why didn't you use the lid?

Always use the lids that come with the jars. Personally, I am a big fan of the ramsey seal. As a newbie, you really should follow directions as written, after you get the hang of it, then it is time to improvise. Just my $.02

A temporary home of the PF-Tek for Simple Minds is here:

http://www.geocities.com/kickme_to_mushrooms/pf/pf_en.htm

The fungifun.org server should be back online in a few days.

You know, that tek only casually mentions the use of lids as a side note.

What's up with that?

Thanks for the replies guys...I started to recognize colonization last night though...and looking at it this morning it seems to be picking up rather fast! I believe the AC had my room to cool...I set the jars in a warmer temp and noticed change in no time.

PS...I used foil instead of shopping for a nail and hammer for the lids...working great so far!

Believe me it works very well . I can't find canning jars where I live and I've been using drinking glasses with foil and haven't lost any to contams. My grain adventures are another story though....

If you have canning jars with lids, you can off course use them.
The foil lid works on any type of jar or glass though.

The PF Tek DOES mention how to use something other than the lids that come with the jars, so I don't see a problem with using tin foil. I prefer the lids though, since they did come with the jars. (i don't like to waste money, hehe).

Good luck, I'm using the PF Tek for the 1st time, too. I started out with only 5 jars, just in case I messed something up. Good I did, too, because I had overhead light for heat (i figured I'd need it, my room is in the basement and we only have a wood stove for heat, which we don't run in the summer). It ended up drying out all my jars. I've started my other 5 since then with no light. It is still pretty mild for temp., so I have slow growth, but my 3 jars that are left are doing great ( 1 was contaminated with mold, the other with some black stuff).
I just figured I'd throw in my experience for you since we're both new at the PF Tek.

..cant figure how to make a new post, so i thought i would hitch a ride...
Two questions: does one harvest eah individual friut, or wait for the flush to mature as a whole?
Is the thick stalks a result of the thick peat/verm casing? (Nutirent?)
Thanks for the amazing wolrd you all have created here. Psyched to be a member of the tribe!

This thread is 15 years old , you get a warning before you can revive one so look for it next time you post.

Nice grow! They turned out pretty good despite the fact that your fruiting chamber has no holes for frequent air exchange , a SGFC should have 1/4" holes on all SIx sides, in a 2 x 2" grid pattern, 5" damp perlite and raised up off the table at the corners by something like jars or cans.

1. You can harvest whenever the mushrooms are ready. You *can* wait, but if you let them mature too far they will cover everything in thick inky black spores. Harvest right after the veil breaks.

2. The thick stalks are the result of genetics, which is pretty random with multi spore inoculations.

Ps- FC does have FAE holes but on a 3*3 grid, and in only the two long sides- somewhere someone posted about too much FAE, so this attempt was to balance that. need a bigger tub next time, the fruit keeps bumping into each other.
Thanks again!

No such thing as too much FAE, all you gotta do is mist more often if the extra FAE makes the cakes dry out quicker.

Next time get a bigger tub and make the holes on all 6 sides (don't forget the bottom and the lid) and be sure to elevate the SGFC off the floor (put books under each corner or some shit).

Dunk n roll immediately after cake flushes, or wait till entire cake batch flushes?

Immediately, as you are using multispore you have a huge amount of different genetics so it's very normal fot the cakes to be a little out of sync wigh eachother. Go with it and just dunk when it'd done flushing, don't wait up for other cakes. Do not re-roll however or this can create a favourable environment for contaminant spores to germinate and waste your hard work. Only dunk.

Did you roll your cakes in a mixture of peat moss and Verm?

Patted on wetted out peat/verm.. kind of a mistake, but mycelia seemed to adapt ok. Two cakes seem delayed though, maybe bruised.

Thanks NakedRat. I suppose a dry toothbrush ought to do the trick. Im reconsidering the peat/verm, since itseems the peat is the primary offender. I do like the nute boost idea tho. Back to the lab!
