Intense leg pain

I went to bed at around 5am and was woken around 11 with an exremely instense pain on the back of my right leg, a few inches under the knee cap. Right when I woke up, I could feel it starting, it persisted for around 10 seconds, then quickly went away, leaving my leg sore. It was one of the worst pains ive ever felt, like a hot nail being hammered into my leg, I actually screamed in pain for a few seconds. This has happened before, and both times were on dorm room beds, which, although not super comfortable, are not rock slabs either. Any idea what this is?

I think everyone has some odd pains now and then. It could be your leg's problem, or a problem with your back, or any number of things. Being healthy in general is my best suggestion.

Sounds like a muscle cramp to me. I got them in my leg like you a couple of times in my life while sleeping peacefully in my bed. It's incredibly intense.

I concur, it definitely sounds like cramps to me babe. Keep your lactic acid levels down. Easiest way to do this is to drink lots of water, and cut back on the soda. Also, try and keep active. If you don't keep your muscles moving then they will just get a buildup of the chemicals that cause them to move and flex.
And yes, I do have a medical degree so you can consider this sound medical advice.
