Subtraite depth question

OK here's a question i cant find a strait answer to. I read that the ideal substrate depth for a casing is like 4"+. Now i've had many a casing that is only 1"-2" and they seem to pinn and flush just fine. Ushally giving me 4-5 flushes.
Now heres the real question. why so deep and what are the advantages.

youre right, almost any depth will work equally well. but you will get much larger and meatier fruits from a deeper substrate, and in the end, a greater yield, or so we believe.

even if it doesnt increase yield, lets say the yield by volume is equal at any depth, you are eventually going to run out of room...
