casing depth
    #1140455 - 12/14/02 07:30 AM (21 years, 2 months ago)

according to Stamets, "the correct depth to apply the casing layer is directly related to the depth of the substrate". He goes on to say, "the more mushrooms expected per surface area, the deeper the casing layer" and "greater amounts of substrate increase yield potential".

My question is this: my substrate = 1 inch. My casing = half to 1 inch. My shrooms = max 2 inches tall at maturity. What would likely happen to my fruit size if I used whole cakes on their sides (spaces filled up with chunks and bits to make it flat), i.e. substrate = about 3 inches? How much more casing should I use, and do you think the fruits would be bigger?

Casing depth is covered here:
http://shroomery.org/forums/faq.php
Most casing material is non-nutritious, so it doesn't provide any nutrients to the myeclium at all. If you have too much of a casing layer most of the energy will be spent to colonize the casing and not much is left over to produce mushrooms.

any else have a response?

I've read the FAQs, thanks daussaulit. From what you seem to be saying, the casing layer may as well be paper thin - i don't think this is right.

no bulk substrate? why case, with no bulk substrate? anyways, if you use bulk, then more spawn = faster colonization of the bulk substrate. I can't think of a reason for people to case, if they don't combine spawn with b/s. perhaps you are, correct me if wrong.

Yes,
if you did it that way you would probably get bigger fruits,
and you should use about a one inch casing layer.
BTW What strain?

I'm still basically a newbie, so I haven't tried bulk or even grains yet. but i've read that cased brf (pf tek) is better than cakes.

strains - i have 2 pints each (4 halves) of F+, Golden Teachers and Romeros. Anything different I should do in their respective casings?

Thanks for the useful responses.! I did a search on one username, and his last 6 or 7 posts were all variants on 'find it yourself' !. Great forum that'd be - basically one-way posts to a gigantic mushroom encyclopaedia. Pure facts, but bugger all experience! You know who you are.

Nope,
there all good strains.
Just stick with it and be patient, and soon you will have mastered the PF Tek, then you can move to grains or straight to bulk, it makes no difference.
Good Luck :smirk:
