should i get my grandpa high?

that of coarse is assuming that he goes for the idea. this isnt one of those fucked up im gonna get people high without their knowledge threads. those people need to get dosed with some datura without their knowledge and see how they like it. ya thats it. that would teach them. but i will leave that for karma to decide. yes, im high.

back to the point, i think my grandfather could benefit greatly from the lovely plant. let me tell you why...

1. hes old. hes 81 years old, hes outlived most his friends and alot of his family. he doesnt work, he doesnt drive, he has 0 responsibilities. which also seems to have created 0 motivation to do a damn thing except wait around to die, reading the occasional book and talking to his dogs. he does have my brother and i living with him which offers a great deal of comfort at least. i couldnt imagine letting him live in this house alone. so anyway, why the hell not indulge? what could it hurt?

2. hes ill. he recently had his third stroke, he has had 2 open heart surgeries and has a hip getting ready to fuck up on him. oh, and he has an aneurysm in his abdomen. but at the same time, other than all that....hes in great shape :smirk: he still gets up and walks around on his own without a cane or walker, he cooks, he cleans (though my brother and i try to take care of most of that ourselves, he will still do it. i think he likes having something to do) but he is in alot of pain. they give him vicodin but he doesnt like taking them. we all know what a great pain killer THC can be, and its quite the different feeling from opiates. why not give it a shot?

3. being old, and ill, and unmotivated has caused a lack of appetite. about 3 or 4 times a week i will hear how hes not hungry but he knows he should eat something. racking his brain trying to figure out what the hell he should eat, but he cant because hes not hungry. he will sit there and loop on it until i talk him into something. again, pot is great at this. i know, cuz i got the munchies.

4. how fucking cool would it be to sit and smoke a j with gramps? if he was willing, how many of you would not do it? i rest my case.

the only reason i can think of for not doing it, are any potential health risks. and really the whole idea must meet this point before anything else. i dont wanna put the old man back in the hospital because the pot fucked with his blood pressure and popped his aneurysm.



so what are your thoughts? should i bring up the topic next time he tells me he is hungry, see if he would even be cool with the idea and go from there? or should i just can the pipe dream of smoking with the oldest man i know due to the fact that it may just cause more harm than good? i really dont know. and i probably would have forgotten the idea if i didnt write it down, so here it is. if you read it, you must be stoned as i am because theres quite a bit of rambling to put up with.

You should bake him some pot brownies and offer those to him. He will probably be more responsive if you offer him something that he doesn't have to smoke. Just a thought. Great to see you, by the way!

What about mental risks such as an anxiety/panic attack? This could also get his heart racing..

Has he ever smoked before? If not you'll have to make sure you stay with him to ensure he has an amazing time for his first. I'm guessing he'll only need a couple tokes. :bigblunt:

m00nshine is currently vacationing in Maui. Rumor has it he got rolled by drunken natives and is currently prostituting himself in order to pay for airfare back to the mainland but he's having trouble juggling a hairon addiction. He won't be back for a long while.

Matt is right, I have heard of old people getting very sick from eating ganja food. A place I once worked someone did it as a joke and this old dude that worked there had to be taken out by and ambulance with oxygen.

You can get much higher if you eat herb. You gotta know how much you are giving him. I think that if he is a nonsmoker, though, he will definitely be more open to eating a brownie, or a cookie, as opposed to smoking a bowl/joint.

i'd certenly talk to him about it and let him know the risks and the benefits!
i'd imagine toking up with grandpa can get VERY interesting, just imagine all the cool stories he can tell you... things worth remembering you know?
i wish i had more time with my grandparants... they're all dead now and i never ever had a mature conversation with any of them!

Dude, I'd really think long and hard before having gramps toke a "j"...

You said he's had several strokes already, well, what if he takes slighly too big a hit and begins to cough...
The cough gets really strong and he can't stop coughing and his face turns red and his blood pressure sky rockets and 4 arteries pop in his brain and he strokes out so bad he drops dead.

How would you feel?

Make some cannabutter and mix it into some cookie dough if he wants to get a buzz. Use your brain. Don't blow his up.

Continuing on what TM said, I'm a little worried about the anxiety too.  There have been a few times when i've gotten so paranoid, it was almost hard to breathe.  Either way i definetly felt a tense sensation in my chest.

While this might be ok for me, for your gramps it might have consequences.

Just think it over, and do a very low dose if he agrees to go with it.
Make sure to have things ready to keep him distracted from paranoid thoughts... ya know, 'never a dull moment'.

You ought to go to great lengths to avoid anything psychedelic coming his way. If you want to set him up with anything then it better be low doses of poppyhead tea, and that very infrequently and under your control. Cannabis has important cardiovascular effects as well as a risk for panic/anxiety, which always is high risk for these people.

If he truly freaks out you can call the morgue instead of 911 :sad:

if he goes for it try vaporizing it, or baking it. Smoking it isn't good for anyone let a lone an 81yr old with millions of mutated cells just waiting to be agitated (yes, everyone has mutated cells, and these mutation increase with age)

DO NOT GIVE HIM ANY WEED TO SMOKE!!!

Weed has some very definite cardio effects! It raises the heart rate and can send the blood pressure up and down wildly.

It's definitely not something I would give to someone who's had multiple strokes and open-heart surgery :wink:

Wiccan, what about if grandpa takes a low benzo dose to curb anxiety? or has a couple of brews?

I know the first time I smoked pot I had the worst anxiety and paranoia I've ever experienced. Even now, if I don't drink before I smoke, I'll get paranoid. Alcohol totally curbs the anxiety for me and just lets me enjoy the high for what it is.

My biggest concern with giving people pot to manage pain would be the anxiety portion of it, especially if they have high blood pressure and cardiovascular issues. If something could be done to counteract the anxiety, I'd think it would be all good.

A question: Why is pot good for glaucoma? Is it because it lowers blood pressure or does it just decrease ocular pressure?

A low benzo dose might curb anxiety, but then strill THC has direct cardiovascular effects which he shouldn't be put through.

"weed is harmless" almost certainly does not apply to him.

It directly decreases ocular pressure, which is a valuable effect.

this is exactly why i made this thread. i am very worried about the effects pot would have on his health, and would not even bring up the subject with him unless i was 100% sure about his safety. which i am not, so at the moment i wont. it was just a thought i had while extremely stoned myself, and i think that if he could dose safely that it could benefit him... safely of coarse being the key word here. i doubt he would even go for it anyway. so rest assured, i will not be putting my grandfather in the morgue.

I think that'd be the best way to administer it, if he's up for the idea. After 3 strokes, I don't think it'd be a good idea for him to smoke anything.

I wouldn't worry about paranoia, he's not gonna get his grandpa ripped out of his gord in the first place, but I'd still be worried about the blood pressure/heart rate thing. A frail heart shouldn't be messed with.
