Refining Raw Opium for Smoking Step-by-Step *PICS*

This is a "step-by step" procedure to refining raw opium into cooked, smokable opium.

You start with an amount of raw opium at least this size :


Put the opium into warm water. Use as little water as possible because you'll be evaporating it off later. So the less you use, the less time it will take to dry. Some sources say they boil the water, but I like to keep it at about 150f to keep all elements in tact (there's talk about some imortant parts of the "O" get destroyed at temps above 150f). Use a thermometer to monitor the temp. You want to whisk it rapidly and dissolve all solubles. Opium is water soluble so just keep stirring for about 20 minutes just to make sure. I use a Pirex measuring glass and put it over the stove on "low":


After stirring over low heat for about 20 minutes, (or high heat, whatever you think is right. I'm still not clear on the whole thing so I use low heat just to be safe) pour through cheese cloth into a flat glass pan :


Place the glass pan in front of a fan for 12 to 18 hours. I usually just leave it overnight, and it's dry by morning :


When dry, scrape the opium off the bottom of the pan with a razor blade:


Then press all the shavings together and you'll end up with this :


A cooked piece of smokable opium. It's common to lose about %20-%30 percent mass through the cooking proccess. Usually it's just a bunch of plant matter. The ball on the left is the size of the raw piece I started with. The ball on the right, is the finished product :


Over all, it's a very simple procedure. Anyone can do it. It makes it much more pleasurable to smoke. And you can still eat it that way too.

I guess smoking raw opium is less pleasurable and harsher on the lungs. Most people prefer smoking cooked opium. There are still people in the Hmong tribes who still prefer smoking raw opium though. It's just a much smoother smoke when cooked and you're not smoking a bunch of unneccesary plant matter. But it's still safe to smoke raw opium, and it still works.

Yes! Coffee filters take too long, get soggy, and break. Cheese cloth filters all matter perfectly as long as you layer it 2 or 3 times over. And you can pour your liquid much faster. And cheese cloth won't break. Too many times have coffee filters busted open and all the poppy matter went flooding into my drink!

I highly recommend jelly bags for filtering. Much finer mesh than cheese cloth and pretty cheap too.

The new types of jelly bag are made of some kind of plastic material so you don't loose any goodies that would soak into the fibers of cheese cloth/muslin/coffee filters etc :thumbup:

Some tribes smoke it this way aswell.

Was your raw opium made by lancing pods?? or did you boil down tea or somthing??

And how was the smoke??

My opium was made by lancing pods, then I made tea from the pods afterwards. Nice smoke and strong tea!

nice post, heres an in depth one... n fact the best ive seen. As for the temperature, do not go over 170f... 150 would be good, 114 ideal, but takes longer... obviously

All Meo (hmong), karin's, Lisu, Ahka's and others always use raw opium period. They do not and never have cooked it.

Some do use water pipes to smoke it in made of bamboo.

Heyy dude gr8 post/pictorial/n info:eek:!! im kinda ive been reeding up on as many opium sources on the net as i can ie poppies.org and here on shroomery.org for any good info sources, and they all seem to very different ways of refining opium, but so far urs seems 2 b tha best. some say to do it in cold water, some room temp, and some in boiling water and eaven some say everclear. Then some say use citric acid or vinegar and some say CaOH-Calcium Hydroxide, and then theres differences on how long to boil it for. SWIM also heard that morphine and codine are more soluable in cold water than in hot, what do you beleive is the best method for getting the most goodies out of raw opium?? im pretty much a newbie wen it comes to papaver somniferum but iv always had n intrest in good plants that give good products and have grown several over the years. i was wonderin what u think. time isnt a factor for me if it means duin the best i can n getting the most out of a crop. What helpful info could you give SWIM n any1 else about how to make his/theirs cooked opm?
also if possibl iz there any info you could give SWIM on how to know when the pod is ready 2 b laced ie indicators that it is mature???? how many days about after pettals fall off?? hes heard anywer 4rom 5days-14, hes also heard alot about a grayish brown band under the pod, a bluish tint outside the pod, it being kinda hard to the touch, and the lil crowns wer pettles wer attaches sticking upwards, and leaves beginning to yellow, any truth to these??
Wen it comes time for SWIM to heat the mix he would prob keep it on the safe side 120F-130F or 150 lik u said. but hes also tring to figure out how long to keep it on the stove, u said 20 min, but Swim can go however long it takes to guarentee the most extraction. Swim has a Cientific C liquid reading thermometer that goes up to 110C would that work? And he will of couse use ur idea of 3layerd cheese cloth 2 strain n follow the rest of ur guide.
also SWIM was wunderin about how many plants it took to get that sized ball of O cuz hes planning on growing a good sized crop this year 4 tha first time?? and of course he will make use of all his leftover pods and straw to make tea like ur lemon laudinaum or make a tincture for long term storage. also im sorry about the length of my post im just very curious n questionative haha:tongue:
