grain and straw questions
    #584437 - 03/20/02 04:15 PM (22 years, 6 months ago)

after getting through the pf-tek method with casings, a friend is ready to take on either grain or straw or both. he just had a few questions before he started

1. can a grain jar be innoc. with a brf cake?
2. can a brf cake be used to colonize a bag of straw...or does it have to be grain?
3. using grain to innoc more grain does it degrade at all over time?
4. is grain easier to contam than brf/verm cakes? (using 15 p.s.i. @ 1hr)
5. is agar worth looking at in the near future?

really what i am looking for is something that will get me a decent amount of substrate in a decent time. i am not looking for the quick and easy way out, just something to decrease colonization time so i dont wait 24 days and then notice a green spots on some of my jars..... jars are alright but its a very long process, i have heard grain is fast and straw is even faster, so it seems that way to go.

thanks :-)

puscle hit it on the dot, but:

1. Yes, however, you'll want to break up the cake or portion of the cake into smallish peices to get multiple innoculation spots. Grain is idealy used because it breaks up.
2. Again, grain is probably better because it breaks up but BRF can be used.
3. Yes, but it would take quite a few generations. That is, you would have to be growing a lot of mushrooms.
4. Yes, it has no upper vermiculite layer to protect the substrate when innoculating. Also, it seems to have more bacterial problems (surving the PC). All in all, yes it is.
5. Yes, defently.

I suggest you read the FAQ and buy The Mushroom Cultivator (if you are serious about this hobby it is the best $29.95 you could ever spend)
