fungus gnats (attn: RogerRabbit and other straw loggers)

Zero experience with this  :sad:.  Somehow there are fungus gnats (or fruit flies or something) on these beautiful straw logs, just as they are starting to pin  :sad:.  Never seen this problem before with straw logs, but it's scary. Would like to nip this problem in the bud -- only saw 3 gnats so far, but that was after just a short glance.  How to fix this  :sad:?  Will they cause contamination  :sad:?

I don't want to speak for him, but I have seen RogerRabbit say that he doesn't really do anything about them, they go away shortly and he cant blame a single contamination on them...


If you want to get rid of them, there is a product called "gnatrol" that works wonders.

I have the same problem since I moved my FC to the garage. Beside I hate them, I did not noticed and thing negative with my case.

Once you can thoroughly clean the FC and the room that it is in.

I dont think they will do anything but aggravating you :wink:

Alright -- It seems that the general idea is to let them do their thing and it probably won't affect much. Ain't spraying no more bleach, that's for sure. Those logs survived the bleach blueing by the way -- they're almost completely recovered.

I don't think that's right!?!? I've heard him recommend BT (gnatrol).

You need to take care of the problem right away or you'll never get rid of them. They do spread contamination bad. Get some flypaper or strips or tubes. Tubes seemed to work well for one guy. I think there is a somewhat recent thread in the contamination forum. DE also works supposedly. Definitely get some BT and use it unless you like little gnats and maggots eating up all your myc and fruits.

P.S. I've never had a gnat problem, this is just what I've gathered from posts.

DE only helps if you already have a gnat problem, stops the gnats from multiplying by shredding their pupaes and eggs.

so if you still have gnats when time comes for your next casing, get some DE and mix it with your casing mix.

otherwise, fly paper, fly tubes or a hepa vacuum and suck those beasties up!

D.E. is not effective when wet. It should be sprinkled on top.

Pretty sure it was him, went something like, 'some folks freak out, but they don't do much damage and will go away in a few days. Have never had a contam I could blame on them...'

Could have been someone else, but was definitely a very experienced member...

Personally, I hate fungus gnats and have both gnatrol and DE on hand.

Well it sounds like they don't know jack to me. You really need to check your source and post a link if you're going to say this came from a knowledgeable member.

Fungus gnats aren't going to go away on their own and they do do damage. They're FUNGUS GNATS for Christ's sakes! Do you think they're going to leave a sea of fresh white myc and go looking for greener pastures? Hell no!

You need to be more careful when attributing advice to others EquilibriuM. Especially a respected member like RR. You both lend credibility to bunk advice, and make RR look foolish by misquoting him.

I'm not trying to be a dick, I'm sure it was an honest mistake, but please don't ever say "fastfred said..." unless you have a link.

Best advice I know against GNATS, is prevention.

An electronic gnat zapper helps, as do sticky strips.

I also pre-filter FAE (into my basement grow room) with  a  squirrel cage fan with an automotive engine air filter hooked to the intake side. Which exhausts into the grow room. :thumbup: :tongue:

Wouldn't applying gnatrol to your grow lead to contam problems?

I mean, that stuff is bacteria right? Not that the gnatrol bacteria will be bad, but what about all the spores and other bacteria in that juice?

The gnatrol and other forms of BT are to use on the houseplants where the gnats are breeding. They aren't necessary or even helpful on the mushroom crop. Most of the time the gnats are just visiting, being drawn in by the sweet smell of the mycelium. They don't eat much.

Fly paper seems to help, as does sticking the hose of your vacuum cleaner in there and sucking them out, which is actually kind of fun. You can put a flea and tick collar for dogs in the vacuum cleaner bag to make sure the gnats get killed when they arrive. They're a fact of summer, but not really a problem most of the time. DE will help if it's dry. You can even sprinkle it around the shelves, or try baiting them with a bit of honey on a piece of wax paper, surrounded by DE.

Anyway, from what I've read, they can be quite a problem if you don't do something about them. RR might not have the most aggressive gnats in his area, and general good practices probably help a lot to control them. For some people though they get really bad and do cause problems.

Don't they eat, then lay eggs nearby? It would seem to me that if they have a plentiful food source their population will explode and cause problems. Maybe you've just had fruit flies or non-fungus gnats that get drawn to sweet things and feed on sugar sources but don't actually eat the fungus?

The larvae don't have a chance in a fully colonized substrate. They need a loose, wet, organic area such as the soil in houseplants to breed. They just munch the mycelium, then go away unless there are large uncolonized areas of substrate in the FC, in which case it's the growers fault. There also shouldn't be enough uncolonized casing material to support the larvae.

yeah, i still have gnats.... but not as many.

just clean out your fc's weekly with a hose and hang new fly strips... I've been slackin for 2 weeks, and they are breeding again.
