I made a pint cake ages ago which i sterilized in the microwave. Its been over a month and has only a small patch of mycelium on it. I decided to open it up, cut off the colonised part and case it. When i tipped the cake out, its was dry as a bone and the bottom looked a reddish colour which may be due to burning during sterilization, and by god, it was absolutely DISGUSTINGLY reaking! I dont think its mould so i crushed up the mycelium i got off it and made a mini casing. By mini, i mean it makes about 1cm thick layer on the bottom of aglass which iv cased with 50/50. Iv got some mycelium poking through after a couple of days so i'll see if i can get anything from it once its ready.

its bacteria. im surprised the mycelium has grown at all... you might have green mold poking through! (green is white when it grows then turns green.) but i have seen recovery from small bacterial infection before. if it reeked really bad it was probably more than a small infection and i'd chuck it if i were you and not even fool around with it, it could become a health hazard.

Well the mycelium was at the area which isnt coloured. When i crumbled it, i soaked it in peroxide water which i know wont help if it is infected but the thought of mould didnt come into my head when i did see it. It also looks exactly like mycelium poking through. The red/brown colour is only on the bottom ring of the container which would surely have spread if it is bacterial mould. There is no smell coming from the mycelium that i cased so i'll just see how it goes.
