Foul smelling horse poo and straw

I was wondering if this pasturized horse poo and straw should smell pretty foul, or if I should chunk it. I baked it in the oven bag for pasurization (170o for 3 hours). Is it supposed to smell like that or are there nasties deep within... (I have spawned from fully colonized rye)

Define "Foul". A sweet smell? Ammonia like? or just plain rancid?

Yea, was this like brand-new straight out of the horse's ass poo? Or did you leech it beforehand? It should typically smell just like soil, so I guess like MisterMyco said, we need a little more info

Ammonia like I believe.... though its pretty nasty smelling I had it in the oven bag for a few days and jsut poured it out into an ice chest and covered it with another colonized jar of rye...... It is the first time Ive used straw...... Should I leave it in the bag after pasturization or pour it into a container and cover with rye grains? (coloinized)

After reading around further (related threads opened up from this post!) I threw the crap out.... rancid as hell .... maybe I oversterilized the shit in the oven.... its harder to get the moisure content and internal temp right there.... Back to the pasture!!

I dont trust oven pasturization, it's too easy to screw the water content or under pasturize

I agree. I also like "open" pasteurization because it lets some of the volatiles escape from the mix. Chlorine, etc.

Chuck it and start again Straw is an EXCELLENT insulator, I'm not surprised 3 hours didn't do it. Pot of water -w- pillow case and weight on top is what I use, hasn't failed me yet.

Chlorine dissipates in the atmosphere at room temperature.
