Smell?

Hi all, quick question. A friend of mine recently injected his spores into his pf cakes and it is now 3 days after that. He says that the cakes are starting to smell, somewhat reminscant of spolied food. Is this normal? Or are these cakes conatmaninated? Are the growing cakes supposed to have no odor. Any answers would be much appreciated by my friend, thank you.

Anything foul smelling is indicative of contamination . Maybe they were'nt properly sterilized?

Well.. He says they were boiled for an hour, like the pf tek says. They smell is rancid but since they're all in the same place it may only be coming from only one or two, do you think it's possbile that a few are contaminated and the rest are fine? It's too early to see mycelium yet.

Also on a side note.. it appears that at all the spots where he injected the spores have started to turn yellow. Not moldy, but at all the sites where the liquid from the syringe the liquid has turned a slight tint of yellow. Is this normal? The smell is not as strong in some of the jars but it's till there, which makes me think that it might just be normal since what are they odds that all 12 jars got contaminated... Are freshly inoculated spores supposed to have any smell at all?
