Compost + birdseed in filter bag experiment
    #575656 -

Please correct me if I am wrong. It seems that spores are germinated on grain because they are easier for the mycelium to germinate and digest, then later moved to compost as it supplies different nutrients for fruiting.

What I am attempting is to put the compost in the bottom of a large filter bag with the grain on top in a ratio of about 4 to 1. I will then sterilize and innoculate. When the grain is mostly colonized I will mix the two substrates and fruit inside the bag. (They are not separated by any barrier so the mycelium can grow right into the compost without shaking, but will most likely digest the simpler food first.)

What I hope to gain is larger fruits and more flushes than an equivalent amount of pure birdseed while avoiding possible contams when transfering spawn. Also it avoids the damage and slowed growth of doing a physical transfer.

I will post pictures when it gets going.

Good idea or retarded?

only problem i see is that the dung will have to be sterilized which depending on how much you are PCing might take a longer time (maybe not though). also sterilized dung is more open to contams so i hear than when pasteurized so be very careful when you open the bag to harvest as it will be especially prone. other than that i bet youll get some huge ass mushrooms from that! make sure the bag is big enough

Can't imagine any contam problems if it gets past the first stage as the mycelium will be dominating the compost long before any other organism even gets a chance to get a foothold.

That is the main reason that I am trying this as many previous attempts were overrun by the green meanie!

any substrate can still contam after the spawn run; its just not likely that there will be substrate still exposed for the contam to feed on but its not impossible. if you notice how dung colonizes there is still a good deal of dung exposed unless cased. just be careful and good luck; it can work!

Any other opinions?
