Is now a time to build my first PC or should I wait?
    #5755319 - 06/15/06 09:20 PM (17 years, 7 months ago)

Well I have several questions… let me start off by tell what I have currently. I have a dell dimension 4500s and I don’t like it and want to build my own because what I do now is too much for it. It has a P4 @ 2.0ghrz 768 of SDRAM 184-pin and it has an integrated 64mb video chip which I turned off and put in a GeForce 5500fx 256mb graphics card, The computer only has three PCI slots and that’s it. It is a profile case that after the added 512mb up grade of RAM and the video card the temp inside is getting pretty damn hot. The power supply is also only 180watts.

I was thinking if I should wait for Vista and DDR3 to come out. I know Vista comes out this fall but not sure when DDR3 comes out. I know it’s impossible to get ahead of the game but I don’t know when might be a good time to get in with building a new computer. I would like a case with 2 120mm fans and 1 80mm fan on a side clear door. I want an AMD mobo and chip set this time instead of a Pentium. Several open PCI slots and at least one PCIe slot but preferably two. I was going to put a 300gig HD I found on newegg and I DVD burner and just a normal drive below it. I would use the PCIe slot for the video card.

I was thinking of the vista 64bit OS

What type of socket would be good? I do basic internet Microsoft office, photo shop but I do play high end games. I am now hooked on battlefield 2.

What chip should I get?

Any suggestions on a brand or size video card.

Keep in mind I do have a limited budget I have yet set in stone.

What is the Serial ATA Support for?
What is the IDE for?
Suggestions on a cheap case. Any links to personal favs?
Is there something I should steer away from?
Any tips?

I have a case I got from work that is for standard ATX mobo and I was going to put my current system in there until I decided to build my own because the Power supply is 400watts and has more airflow so hopefully it can be cooler in there. Is there away I can found out if the mobo in a 4500s dell dimension fits a ATX size?

Don't wait for DDR3, it's way off. DDR2 is still immature. From what I'm gettin from you, you will only need one of the cheaper AMD M2 chips(2GHz or so), 2gb of DDR2 ram, and 7900 video cards are pretty cheap, and they will be more than enopugh for full everything on BF2. If your not a PC performance enthousiast, just get basic mid range stuff and you will be fine.

Wait for Vista?

I am at 2.0 now and thought a little more would be better. You think that's all I will ever need?

I see your confused as what S-ATA means?

Do not go for IDE hard drives go for nice S-ATA drive. Seagate barracuda is the best one on the market.

Why S-ATA , much much better and faster than IDE drives.

The amd m2 processors have built in support for dual channel ddr2 ram, so even a 2GHz, it will smoke your current pc....also Serial ATA is a good idea, but it is not much much faster as jalruza puts it, it just ups transfers by 17MB a second, 133-->150.

peace

Ive seen some nice performance comparison graphs, S-ATA is the shit, reading, writing, copying data, all faster.

I was thinking of spending $750 - $1000. I would like something that gives me options to expand and still be some what compatible with the new things that comes out.

if you want to build a computer now drop me a pm, you can get a computer up and running for around $600 that will play bf2 and oblivion on MAX.
