I decided to take a closer look at these poppies iv had in my garden for ages. They ar all beautefully flowering and 1 has dropped its leaves already. I decided to score it, and what do u know, this milky latex started to ooze out! I then left it for a bit an i returned to find the latex turning to a dark brown
Do you reckon they are Papaver Somniferums or do other poppies produce worthless latex?
Heres a couple of pics, sorry for the bad zoom on the 2nd, its the best i can get.

Their color resembles Corn Poppies, but I'm not an expert.

I say the same though they do look abit big. Definately not Somniferums. If they are corn poppies that latex is useless.
Bees get intoxicated from drinking corn poppy nectar, random fact

Easy way to tell is that poppies are usually one or two heads per stalk and the stems are not hairy. Peonys have many pods per stalk, on substalks.
Peonys can still get one off.

I think that they are Papaver bracteatum. Definitly not Papaver rhoeas. And since the capsules are smaller than P. somniferum, then I guess they are P. bracteatum.
See pictures here: http://images.google.gr/images?hl=el&q=p...gle&sa=N&tab=wi
P. bracteatum is a morphine free poppy, but with some medical uses.
Alkaloidal content:
-isothebaine -oripavine -thebaine -mecambridine -orientalidine -alpinine -alpigenine -salutaridine -floripavidine -bracteoline
Additional info here : http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/entrez/query.fcgi?cmd=Retrieve&db=PubMed&list_uids=619094&dopt=Abstract
LD50 : 14 mg/kg (i.p.)
If you are interested in selling all your seedpods (if it is a P. bracteatum) please PM me. I wish to make some experiments.
