Coco Coir (Different Substitute)?
    #573537 - 03/08/02 03:30 PM (22 years, 26 days ago)

Ok... the old stuff was brough back... what was purchased now is:
Forest Bed
--Expandable Substrate
-Easy to use
-100% organic
-Highly absorbent
-Harmless if ingested
-Expands 7 to 8 times
----------- This came in a brick it is made be T-REX...However, it doesn't say what the contents are... it looks to be pretty fine and defently compact (In a brick)...
Roadkill, I know your a Coco Lover... will this work?.. is this what you use?... if so, how should I sterilize/pasterize it?.... Im guessing: "Cut off chunk, Add water, put in oven bag and put in oven at like 300 for and hour or longer then add water if needed)??...
Any help will be appreciated...
Thankx!!!

Sorry happy,

Sometimes we don't always answer right away...lolz
But we do find the threads.....within a day.

Yes you found the right stuff.

Break off a chunk.....like 1/8 th of the brick.
Not sure how many casings you are making.....but you can keep the moist extra for later.

This stuff really expands....so i use a little bit at a time.

Break off some.
Stick it in a large bowl with water.
Let it expand for a while.
Add more water as it expands.
Make sure your hands are clean.
Mix it up with your hands......making sure you get all the clumps out.
Take a large pyrex dish and put some in the dish.
Shove it in the oven for a hour or so......at 350 degrees.
Let it cool down.
Add water as needed.

When making your casing:
Take the container you are going to use.
break up several cakes or add Rye grain that is fully colonized.
2" or more substrate is good.
Now add 1/2" layer of Coco Coir to cover the substrate.
You want the Coco Coir to be moist.......not too wet.
Squeeze the Coco Coir.....should have just a little water coming out.
After you cover the substrate with the 1/2" layer of Coco Coir..... Cover the container with Alum foil.
Take a fork.....and put several holes into the Alum Foil.
Now you are ready to put the casing into the inbubator.
Wait 24 hours and check.....depending on the strain....you might be ready to put it in the fruiting chamber.
Some strains break through the Coco Coir faster than others.
Some take a few days.....some just 24 hours.
As soon as you see some white breaking though the Coco Coir....Watch it carefully....you don't want the casing to overlay.
After you birth the casing into the fruiting chamber.....mist it.... as needed.
and fan 3 times a day.
You can tell by the color of the Coco Coir when it needs to be misted.
A light red-brownish color means its too dry.
A darker color means its damp.

Hope i helped....you will love this stuff !!!!

The 2shrewmen want to know what Coco Coir is. Shrewman2 looked it up in the dictionary, but wasn't satisfied with the definition. Could you help them out, Roadkill? They're first time growers with jars almost ready for birthing (after only 11 days! projected birthday of two jars: tomorrow!), and already thinking about casing the next batch.

happy,

No i don't cover it up while in the oven....but then again i have a very clean kitchen.
And my oven is a self cleaning oven... and i keep it very clean.
So if you have a nasty oven.....better cover it.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------
2shrew,

Coco Coir is basically Coconut husk.

We get Forest Bed by T-Rex from the Pet stores.
Its used for reptile bedding.

There is also Grow brick....you can get from a hydroponics store.
Its basically the same as Forest Bed.

You can find Coco Coir online also.......if you can't find it locally.

Hope i helped.
