I'm not sure why I'd take that as disrespect. It's not like it's a contest as to who can lose the most limbs, skin tissue, and brain cells. You probably have, and that's cool. The point is, that some of us have to do these horrible things to ourselves. We get off on pain and existential suffering for some reason, so force ourselves into these vicious little "belly of the whale" moments, but then we pickup the pieces and try to make the best of them. Sometimes, they're wonderful growth experiences, and sometimes, they're ugly horrible fuck-ups, but that's not the point.

The problem I was trying to allude to is, that there are people who feel it's their business to tell you what to do and how to live, and those people should, quite frankly, fuck off! I don't regret anything I've done, as I haven't hurt anybody except for myself, and I'm not about to go on Oprah to cry and apologize about my past. I'll leave that to the celebrities who have their precious little careers on the line.

As Jerry Stahl says at the end of the film adaptation of "Permanent Midnight."
