Martin Lopez leaves Opeth!
After several months away from his drumming duties in Opeth Martin Lopez has permanently decided to leave the group. After being plagued by illness and anxiety attacks Lopez decided he wanted to concentrate fully on his own project, currently unnamed. His replacement will be Martin "Axe" Axenrot who's been filling in for the last 5 tours and who also recorded with the band during the recent BBC sessions.
Mikael Ã…kerfeldt: " However sad I and the rest of the band feel in light of Lopez departure I want to thank him for his incredible work with Opeth and immense dedication to the band. We recorded some classic stuff together and he obviously had an enormous impact on our sound. I now feel very excited to hear the material of his own band. In the meantime Opeth fans can rest assured that we'll continue jamming it out with Axe and we all have high expectations about our coming musical ventures "

That sucks. He is an amazing drummer and I hope the new guy can play. Obviously he probably can or he wouldn't be touring with them but still....

fuckin sweet
im so sick of the opeth sound, they needed a change... hopefully this new drummer isn't a complete mimic though. i think they should stop making opeth albums altogether still and work on individual new sounds. i think lopez made a good move

I am so glad I got to witness his abilities on the Deliverance tour...

It was the only show I seen him with the band...And, unfortunately/honestly, it was the best form I ever seen Opeth in live.
Peace to you Mr. Lopez!

don't really like the new sound of opeth.. and how everyone and their mum listens to them. i wish they were still putting out stuff like 'orchid'
if you're bored with opeth and want a new sound, michael akerfeldt used to be part of a band called katatonia, look for the album 'brave murder day'.

Wow, I love the new album. And I don't know anybody that listens to Opeth...
I just downloaded the mp3 version of the Lamentations dvd, that shit is fucking awesome!! Powerful as shit.
Someone should recommend me some good metal. I don't think there is any.

these days i really only listen to doom metal, in all it's beautiful forms.. unless you like your music filled of slow, cold, desperation & melancholly i don't think you would enjoy.. you may though
my dying bride - 'turn loose the swans' is a good place to start for beginners. if you don't find that "decent" i think you fail at metal.

I think now that lots of people are listening to Opeth is great! I always liked Opeth's softer songs but I never really liked them until my friend's dad played the new CD for me. I have a couple other friends who have liked them for a long time, it's not like everybody just liked them at once, it's just that they released a new CD and we're all enjoying it!

Turn Loose the Swans is a great album.
Lopez leaving sucks as he kicked so much ass - Opeth needs to make another album as good as Morningrise.

That sucks. But can't say I didn't see it coming. One of my dumb friends gave Martin some meth after one of their shows. Apparently this was a problem he had been struggling with for some time.. about 2 days after that we heard he had a seizure of some kind and was in the hospital and some other guy replaced him on tour.
I bet whatever project he's involved in now is gonna kick ass though.

Not surprising, listen to his drumming on the song Deliverance, definitely meth fueled.

The next stage should be interesting.

The new drummer is more than capable. I had the luck to be able to see Opeth play down here a month ago and while it's sad to see Lopez go, the new drummer does a good job at filling his shoes. In case you hadn't noticed, their sound has changed from album to album! Each album has had their own sound, and the new one is no different. I'm glad they keep doing what they want to do, regardless of what anyone else thinks. This is what I love Opeth for. That said, the new album should be interesting with the new drummer taking part in the writing process.

Well, i'm not sure if you're talking to me or not, but the last 2 times I seen them they had two different drummers. So, the stability/tightness within the group was not up to par, imo. I am hoping for a permenant replacement, this new guy I am sure will be able to fill Lopez's shoes.. I'm not doubting the credibility of the guy, I just hope he's a right fit for the band, and will stay with them.
