Anyone with anything bad to say bout the Beatles...

...post here and I will dismiss your argument with authority and ridicule.
Seriously though, there's been some dissing of the Beatles on threads here and I want to put a stop to it. Whoever said "the beatles = corporate media puppets, not a band of Artists" is merely spouting shite. While in their early days they were given an image by Brian Epstein, look at what they achieved, both then and more significantly from 1965-69; what does it matter anyway if you're producing great music and art?
Put simply, they were by far and away the best pop/rock band ever. No-one's come close.

Yeah, the beatles are good. but there's one song I really can't stand: Obla di obla da (or whatever the title is ) for the rest the most of the songs are really good.

They were a great band, not the greatest band of all time or anything, but they put out tons of great stuff.
I hate saying any band is the best, because I know that for every great band I get to hear, there are 50 better ones I'll never be exposed to.

I believe that was me. Sorry about that. I'm still a little pissed about the $30 I shelled out for "Anthology", which was a bunch of crap that should have stayed on the cutting room floor. Harrison had to pay off some debts, and they released and overpriced albumn of crap and marketed it as gold to their most loyal fans.

So all that great music they made is meaningless because they aren't making it now?

thanx Doktor J, but it was eye who was dissing the beatles. i wanted to lock the "most overrated bands ever thread" because this forum needs constructive criticism. but instead i decided to join in the spirit of the thread. when i said Quote:

i was not "spouting shite" i was stating my opinion, (half-jokingly) which is based on what i have heard about the beatles, and George Martin... but i don't like to generalize, and i apologize to any nerve that might have been hit. they were geniuses at first until the Industry either killed or assimilated them. like most of the Greats...

Are you sure it was him? I thought Harrison was the one who got sick of being a Beatle and like left to live away from society.. I don't know anything about the releases and who spearheaded them, however, so who knows. Peace.

No-one made you buy that album. It's fairly obvious by looking at the tracklisting that these are out-takes and demos, nothing new, but for a fan it is interesting to hear how songs developed over time.
I do agree that a few of the recordings on the anthologies are a waste of space. But a lot of it I find interesting. It's not the sort of album you'd listen to a lot, but what exactly were you expecting when you bought it?

??? i don't understand you. Two of them are dead, which is hardly their fault. And so Shakespeare's work means nothing to you cause he's dead? Also I think anyone with an ounce of intelligence would take pop culture "philosophy" with a pinch of salt; I doubt they themselves would have been pretentious enough to call it philosophy. Bear in mind a lot of the lyrics were (self-confessed) meaningless drug-induced ramblings, but there's still some poignant writing there: In My Life, Strawberry Fields, Day in the Life. Even I Am the Walrus.

I'm not sure I understand you either. You're saying they were geniuses before they entered the industry... well how come they made undeniably their greatest music, and some of the greatest ever pop music, from 66 to 69, after being part of the Industry for several years? If you're saying their early stuff is better than their mid/later stuff then I would have to beg to differ. Please Please Me against Revolver?
Some people seem to think if you make it big you're compromising something vital. Personally I find this a very romanticised and mislead viewpoint. Are you siggesting that their work would have been greater if they'd never made it big?
You ain't hit a nerve, I just don't agree with you're opinion.

I wasn't reffering to their being dead, I was reffering to the fact that every one of them (with the exception of Lennon) didn't live up to the philosophies that they expressed in their music. All you need is love? Yeah right. All you need is love... and royalties.

I like the Beatles music.
That being said, I think they did help bring about this money-grobbing scumbaggedness that we see so prominantly SPOTLIGHTED in today's music scene - whether they meant to or not, they DID change things in music for the WORSE. I think many of the "pop stars" who have followed them simply didn't deserve as much attention as they got, but since they are "the new big thing" they get blown up nowadays just as large if not larger than they ever were, which is a shame because nobody under the public heatlamp these days is nearly as good as they were IMO, yet is making even more money than they did and probably doing even less work.

I have to agree with that statement, the beatles are good, but with everyone having different points of view and tastes, asking someone to name bands they feel are better than the beatles is retarded...I preffer the doors and deep purple over the beatles personally, and those aren't even the bands that I really have at heart...but I LOVE the beatles anyways, they were great ^^

Agreed. I haven't even opened that thread yet -- too long -- but the title does seem pretty negative and OTDish for this forum...
And now we've got this thread defending the Beatles? One of the more significant musical influences/events/junctures of the 20th century -- right up there with Bob Dylan, Cole Porter, Louis Armstrong, et al...

I think the problem with the Beatles and every Beatles album is the problem with every canonized band and every canonized album. The problem is that the canon is all gay and we're sick of hearing about some faggots with guitars from seventy years ago necessarily incomplete and stuck in the past, kind of.
The Western rock canon is for stupic people who don't like reading books and are rich and use their stupid canon as an excuse to be mean to people who actually love music and it's racist and sexist, too, and just plain bad and the Beatles are the main thing in that whole thing.
Does that make sense? I mean, like, fuck every faggot who's ever used the term 'real music' or tried to use a big objective argument to justify liking some dinosaur band that drive Jaguars and feel contempt for the working class.
I'd rather hear someone passionately explain why they love Alicia Keys or Linkin Park than some Teva-wearing white kid tell me how the Beatles were so above all of that pop shit and they were on the straight experimental tip and was fuckin' up the mainstream from the inside, while all of the stupid niggers were singing about being someone's baby and riots, and they love the Flaming Lips and the fucking-- I don't know, the Polyphonic Spree and shitty NME bands because they're carrying on the tradition of white assholes playing fake pop music. (Kneejerk 'The Beatles were overrated arguments are just as boring.' Because they are pretty good! I like that song about how he's sleeping.) (But who would bother listening to the Beatles now? I mean, listen and make a decision but move on.)
That's not an argument.

Personally I dont like much of their early stuff like I want to hold your hand and yellow submarine just cause it is too bubble gum pop for me. Their talent really showed through from 67-71 when they were more mature and putting out those awesome poetry songs with really catchy hooks. I play the piano and bought their 67-71 book and mess around with the chords. Across the Universe, Blackbird, A day in the life and mostly "let it be" that song sometimes brings me to tears when I tweak with it on the piano. Not many songs can do that. Of course by this time I dont think they were on top of the charts anymore like they were in the early 60's. Alot of that British invasion stuff was hyped up by the sheer image of this different self-contained band and not so much the music. (my opinion) They definately had something special though. I wish I coulda had the oppurtunity to see them in concert but I was'nt alive back then. And I still wish I will have the opportunity to meet Paul and just talk to him for like 5 minutes. Lennon too but that again is impossible. I was born in 83' so I can't speak for the impact they had on the world back when they were the biggest thing in music. Im just stating my opinions based on what I learned last year in music history class and the characteristics of their music.

Any musical group that can make several creative albums (revolver, sgt. peppers, mmt, white album, abbey road) gets a lot of respect from me, regardless of the style...but yeah if people are gonna be eliteist about music, it takes the fun out of it. And everybody knows, fun rules...
