Thinking of going to my first rave...

Some of my friends are going to one sometime soon and they want me to go. If I do go, It would be my first time doing E as well.
My only real reservation about it is I hate the whole club scene, and I cant really dance. Do raves have a totally different atmosphere, or is it basically the same thing as clubs?
I know a lot of people here go to raves all the time, so share your experiences/stories, I want to get an idea of what raves are like.

If you hate the club scene, you may like the rave scene. I'd say the people at raves are generally more real. Of course you'll still run into some stuck-up and fake-ass people but not as much as at a club. Have fun dude, i would love to be in your position. There's nothing like your first roll. Unlike sex it'll be pretty much impossible to have a bad experience your first time.

Advice on the MDMA- don't expect to get good pills at a rave. Sometimes it happens, but it's way safer to try to arrange something ahead of time.

The rave scene does have lots of clubish aspects. There will be lots of dancing, but it'll be weird ass trance dancers. It's laid back in the sense that noone seems to care how freakish you look on the dance floor.

I know you're in NYC so I'm just curious, where is this rave? The Key?

The friend of mine I was talking about goes to Binghamton, so it might be around there. I'm not really sure on the details, it didn't really seem like a set in stone type of plan, but I was having some recent conversations with people that made me curious about raves, which I previously just assumed I wouldn't be into.

I dunno I've been to a couple of good ones and a lot of shitty ones. It's mostly young kids sitting on the floor too fucked up on shitty ecstasy to even move.

'Raves' are different than clubs. Clubs tend to be more meat-market vibe playing shitty music to people who dont know any better and are more interested in getting laid then hearing good music.
Raves, or atleast a descent one -- people tend to be a bit more fucked up, more drugs, more people there to dance their ass off, less of a meat-market vibe (still there somewhat, but not nearly as bad).
Clubs - go out, get drunk, try and get laid, bad music Raves - go out, get high, dance till you cant move, better music
(Yes, I am aware there are also sober people at raves, went to them for 3 years 100% sober)
Better vibe, less snobs, better music (although that depends on the DJs/genres and your personal taste in music. If you want top40 hiphop, you aint gunna hear it at a rave). Tends to attract a younger crowd, late teens/early 20s -- but you do get older people out also, but the vibe just seems younger.
I tend to prefer afterhours clubs myself --- yes, they are different things
I had my fun in my 'raving days', but find that raves tend to have too immature of a crowd that is a little too fucked up, to many glow sticks, phat pants and hoodies and people begging to give me a lightshow. Had my fun in that scene, but doesnt appeal to me as much anymore.

I had my fun. I let go, and I danced, and I had a great time. Bonded with a friend over the whole experience, she's the one that showed it to me in the first place, and our friendship is one of the strongest I have even though neither of us go to raves anymore. It was more of a lifestyle for her at one point, Iw as just tagging along to try something new. It was an important time in my life, but yeah, nothing I could ever get too deeply into.
Only lasted about a year or so anyway, one a month, ltos of great drug experiences. But I always liked eating my acid towards the end, and tripping face through the morning.

Well, in any case, at the very least it sounds like something worth trying.

and, dont worry about being a bad dance - just dance like nobody is watching and have fun. I think I'm an 'ok' dancer now, but when I started going out - I'd just give it my all, stomp, dance, cheer, thrash around. No one cares what you dance like, and half the people there cant dance any good either

everyone I've met thats into the rave scene are a bunch of flakes who follow stupid ideas and philosophy. like this one girl alike the next said; "I left my spirit stones on the beach, who ever finds them now is going to have my good energy mannnnn!" I know it's mean to say, but are these the people you want to assosciate yourself with, moog?

enjoy!! Not saying its a bad thing, I had LOADS of fun when I went to them all the time -- and now and then, I'll head out to a more 'rave' like party now and then just for the pure messy / over the top nature of it
They are great fun, hope you enjoy yourself.

Dont lust over what it was, enjoy it for what it is.
I had alot of friends that used to grasp onto the 'rave days of old' and always bitch that todays parties never lived upto it. You know what? fuck the old days - I was going out, having a blast, dancing my ass off, making friends and having the time of my life NOW. I'm not going to frett over 'what was' back in the late 80s/early 90s.
And, if you know where to look, theres still alot of underground/warehouse/breakin raves going on -- its just a matter of being 'in the know' in your local scene.
Maybe I'm just spoiled here in Toronto, but most 'raves' here are now pretty much 100% legal, held in clubs/etc, but still keep on with the 'rave vibe'. On the upside - you dont need to worry about a party getting shutdown, and still run 'rave' hours (ie: 6-7am).
In Toronto, we have
- your normal clubs that just run bar hours, tends to be a focus on top 40/anthems/hiphop. Tend to shut down around 3am or so (after last call) - your EDM clubs -- these tend to have house, techno, etc -- more 'underground', they tend to shut down around 4/5am or so - Your more 'rave-ish' clubs, tend to have hard house/NRG/trance/psy and harder sounds, and will run till 6am or so - In the summer, we get outdoor parties ranging from parks out in the boonies, to under highway overpasses, to right on the beach, which have gone as late as noon before - We also have the Cherry Beach Promise parties that pick up at around noon on Sundays and run till around midnight or so - We have after-hour clubs where the doors dont open till 1am, the headliners dont come on till 4am, and they run till 'The dancefloor is empty, or the DJs get tired' -- on the opening night of one club, it ran from 1am one day to midnight of the day after, the night I went, it went untill almost 1pm - We have sketchout clubs that open at 6am sunday and run till 3/4am Monday - We have megaclubs like The Guverment, even though its not my thing : that place is massive, books MAJOR headliners, rammed to the tits every damn weekend, and runs till 6/7am or so.
ok, endramble, it just struck me how damn good I have it over here in Toronto when it comes to the electronic music scene
