Why are they all so unfunny? You'd think, going by the law of averages, that they'd have a couple funny people. But, no.

It's old, I think. From the early-90s, I think.
That was a very unfunny time. From 1980
to 1995 nothing funny happened. You could
probably extend that up to 1997.

I like the jokes the host guy tells between
things.

Lots of times those lesser stand up shows have a hard time getting the more tallented performers on their shows. The top comics don't want to be associated with those shit shows, and in many cases they can't perform on those shows even if they do want to because of union regulations. These comics all have SAG cards, and the small cable shows are almost always non union, so the good comics who are union members can't perform on those shows.
So, the cable shows pay about $50 per set to a bunch of guys who have only been doing stand up for a year or 2, and they are not ready to do a solid 5 minute TV set just yet. That skill usually takes 5-7 years to develop.
Also, stand up doesn't always transfer well on tv. What works in clubs often fails on a tv set. What you see on tv doesn't reflect how good most of those performers really are in their natural club environment.

They're hacks though. Like, really bad. They use standard tricks, all the jokes seem like mad libs. They pick on audience members the same way. Do Jack Nicholson impressions. It's really un-good.
