Does asking around locally for manure compost sound ignorant? Will trash compost work?

Hey... i was calling various places locally and i was wondering how shady it sounds to ask someone if they have or know where to buy manure compost. Also, does plain old garbage compost work will for shrooms?

No garbage wont work for shrooms, maybe woodlovers if it was mostly paper products but no not for cubes.
Look in the yellow pages under Stables. They have horse poo for free.

I can safely say that it's neither ignorant or suspicious to ask for manure compost, provided that you're asking in the appropriate places. There are plenty of uses for compost aside from growing mushrooms, and chances are, you're not the only one in your area who uses it.

People call the Stables and ask them for poop ALL OF THE TIME. They dont think anything of it at all.
Call them and say i need some manure when is a good time to pick some up. They will say how much do you need, tellem a tub full or a truck load whatever i dont know how you get down .
It is as simple as that really.

That was a good question, I was wondering that myself. Good to know that there are alot of other uses for poop. I'm also wondering what might be a good answer to have handy just in case someone is feeling talkative and does ask you what you plan to do with it?

Thats how ive figured it making calls.... Finding straw seemed shady... heres my straw story:
Get number for place 1.2 miles away, call, ask "do you guys have straw?" "WHADDYA NEED STRAW FOR!?" oh shit! *click*.
Call back (its the number from the store calling)... *hand phone to friend*
"hello?" "Sorry, i think we got disconnceted... yea i need it for animals." "what kind of animals?" "A horse, my aunt has a horse"
Get to the place, and the guy grills my friend about the use of the hay, and about the horse, and his aunt and whatnot, acts really suspucious of him (asking him same things over and over). My friend kept aasking about all the diff kinds of straw, haha. They guy was eventually like "this is the one you want, trust me" with a weird look on the trust me.
Aked him if he had wheat straw "nah brotha, you cant get wheat on this side of the country"
Then asked him for contents, and he said "its got rye, straw, some wheat, and some other grain"
Got 2 bails and left...
So now im parnoid thinking anything shroom related "everyone knows"... (i had trouble finding vermiculite too, and a couple frowned faces when i asked, like they knew)
hahahaha. Fuck the government!
Gonna try calling some stables, my vermiculite dealer at a local nursery gave me his number, he said he has horse fields behind his house.

the funny thing is if ask for horse poo around where i live i don't say its for gardening. someone my age here saying teh word gardening automatically equates to growing weed. which is fine the vast majority of people couldn't care less its just that im not growing weed adn i can't give samples ahha. if i saw mushrooms they assume edible ones and are kinda stoked. think its neat, just like i do!

True, ive been leaning towards more of the farm stores here more on the outter parts of the city, it seems like the small owners there either wont care, think its cool, or just be completely ignorant about it. haha. Im still scared though. I felt weird buying 3 bags of brown rice flour at whole foods. lol. Di.. di.. di.. did they see me with the grain man??

After like 8-9 stores not having any, i get to a small private nursery in a smaller area of town and the guy around my age working there says they dont normally sell it but he will ask, he asked, and ig ot a HUUUUUGE like 4 foot tall by 1 foot diameter bag of vermiculite! He had a mushroom tat on his neck, and said he had one on his back too, and he was like "This should last you a loooong time" *evil grins*...

As others have said many people visit horse stables, etc. to get hpoo/compost. It's very common (esp. this time of year), and stable owners are usually glad to give it away to anyone. Just remember to be casual & polite. If you're only going to get a few 5g buckets full or so bring your own shovel. If you act like you're scared to get dirty then that will probably arouse suspicion. After all, what kind of gardener is scared to get his/her hands dirty?
Regarding vermiculite & perlite, these can be hard to find during the off season and in some locations period. It can be intimidating for 20-somethings such as yourself to go to a nursery and ask for it. There's no reason to be intimidated unless you walk in looking like a stoner & acting nervous. Then you're just an idiot. If you're concerned about them asking you questions it helps to learn a little about the uses of verm/perl. A quick Google search of "soil amendments vermiculite", etc. will help. Combined with casual dress & demeanor, having even the most basic knowledge of the items you use will get you the goods w/o raising any eyebrows. HTH
