Networking
    #5610984 - 05/09/06 11:28 PM (17 years, 8 months ago)

My dad bought a wireless internet network hub so we can network our computers together. The bad thing is that windows XP has to be installed on both computers. One of the computers has win98 or something, but not XP. We have an XP CD but its being used on this computer, is there anyway that I can use one disk for two systems and have an internet connection for both computers?

why not put the win98 comp next to the router and plug in via ethernet and provide the xp comp access via wireless? I'm guessing 98 doesnt have wireless capabilities..?

I guess not. The other computer is clear across the house that's why we chose wireless.

Does it state in the wireless network hub (router?)manual that it has to be windows XP? Is your 98 machine straight 98 or 98se? Does your 98 machine have wireless capability? If your machine is 98se than you should be able to install a pci wireless network card if you have an available pci slot or you could use a usb wireless adapter but make sure it is 98 compatible.

You definitely shouldn't need to change the OS on one of your systems just to get it on the network. And, if you do change the OS, I'm not even sure how it will help. Sounds like you need to find a third party 802.11b/g PCI card with Windows 98 drivers.

same cd will work on both systems if you go that way, you can activate the same copy a couple times

i agree with bio. i have windows xp, ME, linux, and freebsd all on my network. if you are having trouble finding windows 98se drivers for you wifi card, put the router next to that computer and connect it directly via ethernet.

lol you can use one xp copy on more than one computer? thats news to me. whenever i change ram or grahpics card it calls home to microsoft. and if i remember right if it calls home to often they disable your windows till you prove its still the same(one) computer.
