You need a wireless NIC (either PCI or USB) for the box in question, and a wireless access point (or WAP) to be connected to your current router by wire.

get a netgear or linksys wireless kit. it usually comes with the wireless router and a usb wifi adaptor. i set mine up with a cable connection, so my cable runs into the modem, then a cat5 from the modem to the router. and the wifi card just plugs into the usb on my computer. for every computer you have, you can just get another wifi usb card. also, if anyone brings a laptop into your house (or even close by) you can give them your passcode (called WEP) and they will be able to get online to.

hope this helps.

Uh, only if you have WEP turned on will you need to give them your WEP key. That said, turning on WEP is a good idea.

And really, get PCI (or PCMCIA for laptop) if you have the scrilla, time, and what not. The USB adapters are crap (I've been using a couple for months now).

yep, i told him about the WEP so hopefully he would turn it on. always a good idea.

my wireless adaptor works through 4 walls and a floor. then for a few minutes a week, the signal goes down to 70%, but even that isnt too bad. what brand do you use? mine is a netgear MA series.

So is this one.  The things fall apart and become useless over time, though.  Mine refuses to work in windows any longer unless it is sitting JUST right.  I can shake the box just a little and woops there goes connectivity.

They're just not meant for everyday use

i have a couple netgear ma111's and they're pretty handy, esp for laptops and letting people borrow them. i just picked up a netgear pci card tonight actually and like it a lot better than the usb adaptor, plus it was cheaper! also now when i scan networks i get like 4 more than i used too (in apartments) :stoned:

Yeah, they're great for once in a while quick slap patch wireless networking, this I agree.

Just not anywhere near as good as a PCI or PCMCIA card

the place i use them now, since i hard wired my house, is at the shop. people bring me a pc for repair and i have a few of them laying around to jump online to find drivers and what not. its a really good pc repair tool. just always keep a wifi up in the shop.

you use them for multiple pc's? ever have problems with them? the one's i have work fine in most computers but my roomates sony vaio laptop everytime we tried to install the actual usb adaptor (driver installs fine) the computer crashes, then when it comes back on it says "computer has recoved from a serious error blah blah." also happened in a neighbors HP desktop. i've tried everything and was on the phone with netgear support for about an hour while they told me to try everything i already did and then said they didn't know what was wrong, i also called hp and sony support and they both said they didn't know what was wrong. i searched the internet and couldn't find anything helpful. i tried disabling all the drivers to the other network connections and it didn't help.
