Help - Winter Hunting, NSW Australia

Hey guys,

I'm fairly competent identifying psilocybes and I've found plenty of C.Cyanascens and P.Cubensis in paddocks during the warmer months, but I've never found any of the mushrooms that grow through the winter months.

Can someone please advise me of where exactly I should be looking? I've tried a few times in past winters but never with any luck. Usually I search after rains around national parks and nature reserves in garden mulch (wood & straw) and in eucalypt debris on the ground in bushland. I've seen some interesting mushrooms, but never any psilocybes.

Maybe it's not cold enough where I live? I'm a an hour or two north of Sydney. The weather here now has been hovering around 18 deg C max and 11 deg C min but it will get colder in the middle of winter.

So to sum up, am I looking in the right places? And is the temperate range okay?

BTW, this is my first post here in years. Hehe.  :rolleyes:

the temperature range seems ok. I'd say they are definately around after all subs have been found last year in springbrook in QLD, late in season too. Don't give up they are pretty difficult to find when you haven't found them yourself before. This may help you - some of the places I have found subs in car park woodchip beds, landscape woodchip beds, garden woodchip beds, conservation parks, golf courses, pine forest plantations, national parks, native bushlands, native forests, edges of pastures, horse riding trails, recreational parks, hiking and walking trails. With woodchip patches they have to be Eucalypt which are grey and usually there will be cover from the shade like trees. Also in woodchip patches look for indicator mushrooms such as Stropharia species as sometimes these places will have subs fruiting later on.

They dont have to be Eucalypt, although they probably fruit more from there than anywhere else. Ive found subs fruiting from all different sorts of woodchip, but i have to say eucalypt seems to support fruits better than the others, and seems to produce better flushes year after year.

yeah true they can fruit off others like pine. but there is more chance of finding subs when checking eucalypt woodchips beds then others, IMO anyway

Thanks for you advice guys. Sounds like I've more or less been looking in the right places. They often grow from eucalypt mulch in native bushland, right?

I am a little worried it's too warm and I'm wasting my time, but I dunno... I've done a lot of searching before and never even found one.

However, like I said above I've found heaps of Cubensis and Blue Meanies during the summer months...

its pretty rare to find them in bushland and same with mulches. Id be focusing on woodchip beds around the suburbs If I were you. temperatures arent too warm we are getting similair temps here in Adelaide and we are finding a few. MagicRooms is from Hunter Valley in NSW and he finds cubes, copes and subs in his area. If he is still around maybe you could ask him for advice? also remember season has just started, you have the rest of fall and winter. last year around this time no one had really even found them yet

I am from the same area as MagicRooms then. Found plenty of cubes and copes in the cow pastures, never any subs, ever.

Anyway I enjoy looking around and being outside. I don't eat psilocybes even, I just want to find them to photograph, collect spores, etc.

Edit: tryptonite, just had a look thru your photo gallery. Nice pictures! Looks like a lot of yours were found in native bushland tho... (?)

yeah so do I. During a year Id only take mushrooms 4 or 5 times maximum but take hundreds of photos during the year. The reason I got so many bushland photos is because I keep returning to the same areas and SA doesn't really have many good eucalypt woodchip beds around. We check many different types of bushland and very few have the right conditions for subs. When checking woodchip beds they seem to have a higher success rate than bushland, e.g fewer different woodchip beds have to be checked to find subs. by all means check bushland, but I think it may be wise to invest more time in checking woodchipped areas. also the pine forests where trees are chopped down and accumulate more natural woodchips (not the evenly cut stuff layed out in beds) are good places to check.

If you come down to the central coast I'll come looking with ya. Not good at identifying but I'd love to learn.. At the moment I'm happy just with cultivated cubes.
