Humidity help!!

ok i have 2 casings in this rubbermaid container with an inch of perlite on the bottom with a 1/4 inch depth of water. there is hardly any sign of humidity in the container. Even if i was to add an air pump/air stone in the container, it would not raise the RH to the desired position. What else can i do???

i use more perlite. 3 inches of perlite to 1 and 1/2 inches of water.

if an air pump is to be used make sure you position it in a place where it is going to get the most surface area so it can humidify the emtire chamber.

if that doesnt work better start misting the sides

Do you have a Hygrometer to measure the humidity? Keep the casings moist and keep that bubbler running and the RH should go up. How do you know that there is no sign of humidity in the chamber. leave it for a few hours and dont open it every 10 min, it should go up.

No, i don't have a hygrometer, i just go by the condensation on the walls of my fruiting chamber. there is hardly any sign of condensation on the walls, even after a couple hours of waiting. i was thinking of misting the sides of the chamber, but didn't know if that would have any affect.

condenation does not equal humidity. how do you know its not at the desired position if you haven't measured it with a hygrometer?

condensation happens when the inside of your fc is warmer than the outside. i just posted this in another thread... but if you run your finger along a surface and it feels at all damp, you're good. especially if you just put this together and used cold water, its probably a little bit cooler in your FC than the air temp and you'll definitely not see condensation. go ahead and set an ice pack on your lid and watch the condensation go.. wheee. casings don't need as much humidity as cakes anyway, that's one of the main reasons why the casing is there! it provides a humid microclimate just above your substrate.

This has been said many times but still needs to be repeated. NO standing water in the perlite. Any standing water will lower your humidity. Drain the perlite very well, then dump in your terrarium. As said, condensation is not an indicator of humidity, but of temperature differential. A good hygrometer is fifteen bucks or less at a cigar shop.

Well if your gana do extended gone ness and need a semi-auto ghettofabulous setup, go buy a underpad heater for reptiles from like.. petco or a pet shop or whatever, stick it to the bottem of the aquarium, add a little more perlite and make sure theres allways just a little bit of water at the bottem, you should have at least 80% pretty steady.

oohh. yea, i always figured if there was condensation, there's humidity, but now i see my mistakes. thanks all of you for your help. but also, ive heard from many places different methods of using perlite. one, where u moisten it and put in the FC and two, leave a layer of water WITH the perlite. which one gives better results??

any perlite under the water is not exposed to the air the thus isn't doing you any good. the only reason youd water standing water is as a reservoir. but this standing water could lead to contams so theres no point. just mist the perlite. it takes a long time ot evaporate all its moistness anyways. it won't dry out.

perlite = lots of tiny holes = surface area = humidity

perlite in standing water or otherwise waterlogged = tiny holes filled = no more surface area than standing water, rendering perlite pointless

you can leave a bit of standing water at the bottom so you don't have to re-dampen/refill so much, just make sure theres plenty of perlite above the water level. two or three inches above the standing water level is where its at. if you don't have enough space or enough perlite, adjust accordingly keeping in mind that simple explanation of how perlite works...
