need advice on cakes

i have read that it is ideal to birth cakes 2 inches apart. what is the reason for this. so if a cake gets contam. the rest wont?
what happens if the cakes are touching in the terrarium?
what shoulkd i look for if a cake gets contaminated?
i have also read that mycellium at this point can fight off contams easier.
so is contams not as big a problem at this point rather than during incoulation and incobation?
i am tryin to squeeze more room into my terrarium.

Also, the more cakes you squeeze into your terrarium, the more often you will require air exchanges.

Give them some room to breathe!

If you want better density in your terrarium then next time you should crumble the cakes and case them.

Contaminates look pretty much the same thing on cakes in the terrarium as they do in the jar. It is harder for contaminates to get a foot hold because most of the food is covered (by the mycelium). Contaminates that eat the mycelium or fruitbodies are still a problem... trich (the green ick), cob web, and bacterial blotch are all 'common contaminates' that can move in during fruiting. There are others as well.
