colonizing rye bags...

I've got a pint of rye grain in a filter patch bag that is 95% colonized, the only area left uncolonized is a thin layer on the top side of the cake, which looks a little dry compared to the rest of the bag. I've alread broken up, and mixed up the mycelium inside the bag twice. My question is, should I wait for it to colonize the top part or should I break up the bag one last time in hopes it will colonize it faster.... I'm worried that I'll take away even more nutrients by breaking it up because each time I do this I think it burns a lot of energy to reestablish itself. temp in the incubator is 85 degrees, any suggestions?

It sounds to be like the top is always going to be a bit too dry and never fully colonize or recover no matter how often you mix. Since you already mixed it up I'd let it colonize again and if it still doesn't colonize the top then its time to open it up either put in a humid chamber to finish colonizing or ideally case the material or use it as spawn for some bulk material.

Thanks for the advise workman, a bit of information on the bag might point out why it's doing this... These are 1 pint bags from Dr. Bluethumbs, they dome presterilized and mixed with filter patches.... This particular bag was innoculated on december 14th, I then went on vacation and left it in a dark box with a temp of 72 degrees. I came back five weeks later and see the bag only 60 % colonized, so on january 20th I crumbled it up and stuck it in an incubator I built the previous day, I did not have a thermometer so the temp was at 96 for four days, which must have dried it out some, I got a thermometer and set temp to 84 degrees, then I crumbled it some more around th first of this month, my electricity went out for a week so it was at 70 degrees for around 6 days,now its back to speed, has been for week and a half, and now is the last time I'll crumble it, like i said, it's about 90- 95% colonized as of now... So you can see this bag has been in temps of 70 for 5 weeks, 96 for 4 days, 70 again for a week, and finally a nice, stable 84... I feel bad for it, it's been through hell, I doubt it will even pin.

any thoughts?
