First time hunter in Iowa, just rained yesterday and last night its been humid the past couple days and the temperature has been high seventies each day. A buddy and I are gonna go see what kind of luck we have tonight, just seeing if anyone out there has any last minute advice. Well, wish us good luck, and happy mushroom hunting!

What kind of mushrooms are you hoping to find.. active or edible and which part of Iowa do you intend to scour. I have spent a little time in Iowa City (The Tobacco Bowl coffee shop rocks!). Morel season is just kicking off here in north eastern Kansas, I?m sure you could find some in the nice hard woods forests between the corn fields maybe in a week or so. georgem

Probably areas around Cedar Rapids, and well honestly were just gonna make a trip out see what we can find, we have no hands on experience. I've boughten a couple books about mushrooms in general and one on active mushrooms is on the way. I haven't been able to find much information on specifically Iowa.

With regard to psychoactive mushrooms in Iowa I think the only active you are likely to have much luck with is Panaeolus subbalteatus. Not the most potent mushroom around but rather pleasant. I?m sure you can find many wonderful edibles however the season is still early. If you don?t know already, learn how to make a spore print so you can provide spore color information with your future ID requests Good luck? I predict you are going to find Coprinus species? everyone does.

FYI? Last night a native Iowan spoke at the mycological club I belong to. He seems to think morels are still about a month away in that state. georgem

You are looking for morels (choice edible, but not active) right?
Just have to ask - you don't know how many posts I've seen with people asking something like "are morels active man!!11???".

So, yet once again the trip was delayed, due to the vast ammounts of alchohol consumed into my body, oh well! tommorrow maybe?
