My first ever morel find!!

I decided to go on a morel hunt for the first time today while checking some patches that I think have good pan subbs potential. I took a route through the woods and kept my eyes to the ground. I got to an area where a young pine forest ended and a young hardwood forest began. I spotted a squirrel a few feet off the trail running around excitedly as he foraged. I thought to myself, "I wonder if he has found some morels." I stepped of the trail and within seconds I was in a magical morel-land. I picked about 10 to bring home for lunch.
The habitat where I found them was a woodsy area with exclusively young maples and young, skinny elm trees. No oak or tulip poplar in this particular area. Also didn't notice any hickory, but it is possible that there were some hickory saplings.
The stems are hollow, and the caps are completely attached to the stems. The odor is mouth-wateringly pleasant. I am assuming that these are Morchella esculenta.

happy hunting, xmush
oh yeah, i am in central NC. So NC morel hunters be on the lookout. And special thanks to the squirrel who tipped off the location!

Awesome! Congrats to your first finds. Morel hunting is really fun.. Once you get an idea of how and where to find them, it comes easier in the future. Probably another week or two until they start coming up in numbers around my way. May you find many more in the future!

Just sauteed them in some butter and garlic, then coated them in crumbled ritz crackers and fried a bit longer. Yummm!

If you find a bunch more of them you should consider drying some too possibly. I found so many last year that I couldn't eat them all, so I had to dry a bunch. Dried morels seem to be pretty valuable.. did you see the online price for them?

i imagine they are pretty pricey. It seems that over the last few months, grocery stores have really increased the number of mushrooms they have. My local harris teeter has fresh chantrelles, hen of the woods, hedgehogs and dried morels on a pretty regular basis.
I only picked a handful for my first try, but I bet I could find several dozen or more near where I was.

fry them bitches in butter and diced garlic! MMMM, DAMN GOOD!
I remember the first time I found one, there was 2 side by side, and it was the best day of my mushroom hunting days.
great finds, hope you get some more. if theres some fruiting around, find some similar habitats and see if you cant getyourself some dinner for future nights

Very nice. Hunt for those things like it's your job for the next week or so. I'd imagine you have a week or 2 left before the season ends. Hunt hunt hunt
