Iowa morels
    #2599393 -

Had few days of showers so yesterday friend and i went behind his place into some woods.  Just looked for standing dead elms with bark falling off, searched in a 10 foot radius and got around 50 or 60 grey morels.  Still couple weeks before yellows start popping, and then morels are everywhere around here!  Happy shrooming guys and gals. :mushroom2:

Just got out of the woods in northeast Iowa, I didn't find any morels but I think I stumbled into some gymnopilus growing on the base of a dead elm. I cant wait for those big yellow morels fried up with some fresh walleye!

First off, good to meet ya Boomer. The yellow ones are not up yet, the weather has been a bit on the chilley side, so the greys around here are just getting started. The yellows have'nt even begun here yet, they are usually 2 to 3 weeks after the first greys pop. The greys will grow bigger to about then so i would say peak season here this year will be in about 2 to 3 weeks and will be about a week or 2 of "peak season" before they start tappering off towards the end of May, early June. Just truck into the woods and look for fallen trees, and dead standing ones with bark falling off and start hunting. Once you find one you start spotting em easier and soon you'll be bringing sacks home too!! Hope i helped ya, Happy Shroomin!!

Hey there Nation, I live in the CR area, the czeck fest is called Hobie Dayz (pronounced Hoebee), it's held in Czeck Village along the river. I still go almost every year. Great food there ummmmm. Today should be a good day for morels, i'll be heading out again this afternoon, though i still can't locate my friend to borrow his digi cam, but no worries i'll get one by the time the yellows start poping hopefully. Happy Shroomin!!

I hope i did'nt get ya to excited Boomer hehe I just got back and bagged another 20 or so greys. Also wanted to let ya know i seem to have better luck around the trees that are'nt so big between 4 and 12 inch diam trees seem to yeild the best for me, also it seems that if you can find where there are a 3 or 4 trees in a small cluster, those seem to be where u find the most. Hope ya find some bud =) Happy Shroomin!

Yes, Eastern Iowa. When i first started hunting morels i could'nt find any either, but my friend would spot em right in front of me. I had to actually get down on my hands and knees and crawl around to find em at first, but as your eyes get more trained they seem to be easier to spot, now i can spot em from 10 feet away! It could just be the area your looking in is'nt good for morels, you might wana try a couple different spots, or try to hook up with someone in your area the first couple of times that can show ya what to look for, which is what i had to do at first. Hope ya get more lucky next time though!! Happy Shroomin!
