I think you are referring to Zonolite which was the stuff that had the asbestos and they don't make anymore (since 1990).

yeah i was at menards a few weeks ago looking in the garden section, but they said check the insulation section and sure enough they had a shelf full of five pound bags. but the chunks are way too big.

Actually thanks for the info most garden stores here in SLC sell only fine grade vermiculite, upon making a couple calls after reading this I found chunky in the insulation dept.

Therm-o-rock is another name brand of vermiculite packaged for insulation. It works great for our uses and does not contain asbestos. The mine in Libby was shut down. You can get a better deal on a 3 cubic foot bag if you'll find an insulation supplier in your area. I bought 9 cubic feet for $5, which is what the garden and hardware stores charge for the little bags. RR
