Hiya
I seen on television where the tribe went out, the root from the ground, and made there own Kava Kava. I tried it before but it was weak tea from the store, they made it look good, what would be the best way of doing kava?
I've tried the extract it never really worked, the first time it did for about 10 minutes then it never did again = (
link me with some websites where i can order quality kava that works!
peace

considering kava is the native drink of the fijians, it comes from the ground there. and since customs are so freaked about nematodes on the roots, they must be ground up into a fine powder. when bought in powder form, its quite weak and tasteless. fresh root is VERY potent and will kick your ass after 20 coconut bowls. dont buy the powdered store stuff unless your looking on drinking 50+ bowls (literaly) of kava.

the customs in the US inspect anything coming from overseas. especialy the tropics. us department of agriculture would quaranteen any seeds or cuttings sent over.
i dont think its quite possible to grow kava in the US anywhere. If so it would have to have a thick soil with maybe non-sulpherous clay added, and be in a greenhouse. It takes 5 years to fully mature the roots to the potency desired.
In fiji wheres its grown wild, the suns so hot that if ur not used to Ausie and tropic heats can burn you even in the shade after just 15 minutes. You'd need superb lighting and moisture levels, along with the right consistency of soil(which as i mentioned is thick and clay-like).
so if you can provide those conditions for at least 4 years (the potency will increase ALOT after this point) you may have yourself your own US grown kava plant.
myspace has alot of people from fiji. you might find some help from someone in Suva, the main city on the main island of Vitu Levu.

Cool, thanks for the info.I figured it would take a few years to get a plant mature enough to take root cuttings from.
I didnt plan on growing it for a fast way to obtain kava.ust a safer, reliable and more good hearted way,I have a few plants that are gonna take forever to mature:betel nut, mimosa, red sandal wood.I think a kava tree would be a nice adition.
Why would the seeds be quaranteened? I think an envelope would surfice?
Do you have anymore info on growing conditions?I can do the soil,as I live in the southeast and its mostly clay around here. The lighting may be a problem.Im sure the plant can adapt to normal sun around here.
I wonder if anyone has succesfully grown one.

ive never seen any seeds from them, but they've got to exist.
in fiji they took cuttings from plants they just harvested, and they would plant them everywhere. one harvest gives you 1-2kg's of root and 20 new plants in the ground. they could also just hack 20 plants off one big bush and it would grow back the cut parts in less than a month(if they werent harvesting but needed clones).
im sure an envelope would be fine.

The problem with seeds is that they barely exist. Same as in Salvia: you might be able to obtain some if you are ExtremelY lucky, but since the possibility of germinating them is close to nil, why bother.

kava seeds usually only occur on the wild spp of kava Piper wichmannii. Piper mythisticum(cultivated) is only propagated by vegative cuttings. so you will never ever find seeds of kava. by the domestication cultivars of kava have become infertile. cuttings are becomming more and more available. infact some people have found them at a local green house.
