Pinset

Is patch casing the only way to obtain an even pinset, or are there other methods?

cold shocking also achieves an even pinset

Evenly laying out the substrate layer, and evenly laying the casing soil on top of the substrate leads to even pin sets. Good preperation is the best way to a good even pin set. Everything you have to do after the fact is recovery, and not optimal.

Cold shocking subtropical mushrooms just slows down the pin set. Anything below 74 degrees F is less then optimal for Pinning and fruiting.

Initiate your casings earlier. Give them good air exchange to stop casing colonization. The combination of available nutrient depletion in the substrate, and exposure to air causes a drastic reduction in core substrate temperatures. You can get even and excellent pin sets at a constant air temperature of 80F.

If you are using thin casing layers on thin substrate layers, I would initiate within 24 hours of casing. Don't even wait to see mycelium peaking through.

When doing BULK(6-12 substrate layers) attention to detail becomes increasingly important. Temps will need to be below 80F in the Air surrounding your casing. But it will never need to drop below 70F at any time.

Cubensis is subtropical. It is not temperate.

Thanks Teonan.. exactly the info I was looking for.
I have a couple of more questions though.
Is it important to maintain constant temperature, or is it ok if it fluctuates within acceptable limits?
Do you suggest patch casing? or is this simply another avenue for contams which is not needed if the proper steps are taken in preperation of the casing?

Hammy.

is that right

I am using smaller substrate (rye tek) layers and fairly thin case.
its about 1" colonized rye, covered with 1" case.
so you're saying i should cover this up with saran wrap for 24 hours, then pull it off, and let it rip in my terrarium?

1" is not a thin casing layer.. you should wait until you see mycelium in the valleys of the casing layer, then birth it 12-48 hours after that point.
