Uneven pinset - What should I do?
    #3056098 - 08/27/04 01:21 AM (13 years, 3 months ago)

AFOAF asks...

If you have an uneven pinset, and you find that the mushrooms aren't maturing generally around the same time.. what should someone do? This is a 50/50 verm/peatmoss casing. I see more small mushies forming, and two caps just broke open. Theres still a bunch that are bigger, but not yet mature. What steps should I take to harvest this batch?

Just harvest them as they mature, they'll probably come off in clumps but it doesn't matter if you pull a few small ones with the mature shrooms.

Next time around is your chance to get it right
#1 get your substrate as level as possible (very important for even pinsets!)
#2 get that casing soil as level as possible AND still leaving plenty of minute mountains and valleys (microclimate).
#3 on early breakthroughs patch (early breakthrough consist of only a few breakthroughs or less) these tips will lead to much better pinsets  GL

When making the substrate layer as level as possible, about what size should the chunks of substrate be?

I read that the substrate should be crumbled to popcorn sized peices. Is this sufficient enough to acquire an even pinset? Or would it be recommended to crumble the substrate to an even smaller size?

Nickel sized chunks work best which IMO would be the same as popcorn sized. GL

Yes yes... you seem to know what your doing. I read a few of your other posts and came to some of those conclusions... Ummm... One question though.. could you elaborate a little bit on answer #2?? Also, I did patch.

Damnit. The TEK I used said to slice it in cucumber style chunks. Maybe that was my downfall. That won't happen again

Well the surface still needs structure and some people (very few) think a level surface mean "smooth" That is absolutely not what you want! By level I mean only a difference of 1/4-3/8in. from the valleys to the peaks and the more structure the better for they're (pins) microclimate. Now this may seem too indepth but it is very easy to do in most cases it just turns out this way without even trying as long as you pay attention to what you are doing. This surface structure aids trememdously in pin developement.

I have found if I leave the subsrate without casing it for a few extra days and let the surface of the Myc. get very dense, even and ready to grow like mad.
The casing gets colinized very quickly and evenly.

Mabey I am just going on an unproven tid bit but. It does seem to make for even pin sets . Especialy with the combined advice from above.

Just to make sure your right, you want to form valleys and little peaks out of the top layer of the casing mix with a 3/8 - 1/4" difference?

You don't form them they form themselves! Just place your casing mix on the casing shake it level then if ya see any high spots just knock them down with a fork (I use a fork alot (until I got married!) :frown: )

well if you ask me thats ur problem ur ph is probly at about 5. and shroomes don't grow evenly at that ph. in my opinion ur lucky you didn't contaminate. next time just use the verm you will end up with better results. and if u can find bed a beast at your local pet store in the reptile section you won't need the buffer or the peatmoss. and to answer ur question what should u do? eat the mushies learn from ur mistake and the next grow will be better:)

I've seen poorer pinsets using straight verm consistantly over the years. I've also seen that peat based casings can flush very good without buffers but they tend to contam much quicker after a few flushes increase it's acidity. Myc does not consume the casing it grows through it this IMO makes it tolerate wider swings in pH.
