I just think its another shroomery trend thing. Your remember the whole ICP gang thing in OTD awhile back?
I say let OTD do what they will...it gets old fast. Even they know that.

It's confusing. You often wonder who it is you're dealing with and if you're not a mod you have to be one of a select few to find out, that select few not including most veteran users, or even most who contribute the best content to the site.
As a moderator I several times had to tell people that they cannot change their username *for personal reasons* because it is against Shroomery policy. Then one morning I log on and dozens of OTD regulars have changed names like they're in a witness protection program, for no reason at all.
Many of these people also have elaborate ban histories, some of the most elaborate ban histories on the site in fact, which makes me wonder why they deserve what is denied to others.
If it is to stay on I'd say let their Title say "aka XYZ" with their old username. If you look in an old thread and someone says: "XYZ is right!" and you see no user XYZ the thread loses its continuity.
It's confusing.

That proves you don't comprehend. Don't tell me what my opinion is unless you UNDERSTAND it.
It has nothing to with "happy hippiness". It has to do with this board being a place for "like-minded people" not a hangout where people push and shove each-other and flame and disrespect each other just for kicks. Disrespect and dishonesty and games of hate and foolishness and all the other crap that goes on is a waste of time that may have a place somewhere on the web, but not at The Shroomery. Or at least let it be confined to OTD, but spreading the hate into our serious forums is just not tolerable and the name changes apply everywhere.
I can understand a simple change like HeavenlyBlue to HB or gdman420 to gdman, but all the bullshit changes are just stupid crap that's annoying to people who use the board for what is was created for.

A lot of OTDers post in a lot of other forums and many of those users have changed their names several times in the past week or so. It's very annoying, confusing and childish.
Ythan, I know you think it's funny, but it really isn't and never was. Again, please stop destroying this place. I truly love this community, but it's becomming difficult to spend time here and have to deal with these games and annoyances.
Where else on the entire web is there a large community bulletin board who's administrators allow users to have their names changed on a whim? It's ridiculous!

"now who's the loser? "
Still you.
My drug use may have been excessive a few times, lots of us have done that. It's caused no permanent damage to me and hopefully educated others on possible dangers and side effects. If you percieve that as acting "like a 15 year old" you're simply mistaken. Anyone can experiment any way they see fit with their own body and mind.
And how is it that I prey on younger women? You'd better stop the slander, my friend.

Tripmeister gives his opinion about the matter. A strongly emotional one, but his opinion nontheless. Then out comes a slew of personal attacks and digs at him.
It's ironic that some people who often are first in line to defend freedom of speech now use low blows to stifle an opposing point of view.
Like Anno said: get ontopic already, this thread is about uncensored opinions about the matter at hand. Let's keep argumentum ad hominem where it's supposed to be: in the Latin dictionary.

I find it pretty confusing, and propably would prefer it if it didn't happen, or at least people stuck with variations of their own names so I'd still recognise people that have been posting for years, but hey, if they don't want me to recognise them, that's my problem, not theirs. It's pretty silly to try to stop someone from changing their username to something they prefer just because I find it inconvenient. It's their account.

As I see it it's always been policy to only do this in rare instances when there is a serious issue with the original name. (such as harassment by spouses or nosy law enforcement) If you suddenly change name to something unrecognisable you are basically taking on another identity. People will lose track of you and alot of archived posts will become cryptic as its unclear who is quoted etc.
Most namechanges I've seen are equivalent to putting on a party hat or even people getting a namechange they didn't request.
I'd say it should remain a rare occasion for special purposes.
It's a pretty big thing to change your identity in the community you are part of. Every longtime poster with a message has some 100 people following their postings that they're unaware of. To take "an unlisted number" seriously screws with your presence in the community even if your first-line buddies are in on it.

One of our best mushroom identifiers just had his name changed to "my chin is a ball rest". Funny sure... but it ruins his credibility, and I am certainly not going to ad "my chin is a ball rest" to the list of trusted identifiers.
Please change his name back to eris. We need him in mush hunt.
I read that thread in OTD and almost died laughing. If those with name changes only posted in OTD there would be no problem, but the insanity is spreading to the rest of the community and it needs to be quarantined.

it's fun for a bit, then it just gets old.
Make it a yearly thing, the month of March, or something non-permanent.

do you seriously think they are going to keep these names for years to come?
Some may want to hold onto their changed name, which has happened before.
At the moment people are/were offered voluntary namechanges. It's reasonable that some take this serious and would be displeased if their new name was suddenly taken away from them.
If I were to click a page and to find out I'd be changed to Pecan_Seeker I'd probably LOL about it. It's still recognisable and nonoffensive. If I however found my username to say I'm somebodies ballrest or something similar I'd be pissed off. Like Shroomydan argued: some of those things diminish the response to their serious posting.
Below is what I argued among the staff just now, its a nuance on my earlier position and I don't want to retype it so a C&P will do
------------------------------------------------------------------------
In my view it would be best that if this namechanging is to go on, there in my view has to be a little coding done so that the changed names only are visible in OTD (but snap back when posting on other forums) and perhaps that a mouse-over the user name reveals the original name.
If any OTDer in the confines of OTD can change their names to whatever they want whenever they want then this may give rise to a lot of clean and not-so-clean fun in there for months on end.
So if it stays confined to OTD it would definitely be a good idea in my book because OTD is a bit lame lately and this might give the impulse it needs to get more interesting again. But in OTD only. What's clowning and perhaps quality mayhem in OTD all too easily becomes confusion and a headache if it gets out on the rest of the site.
------------------------------------------------------------------------
I do say OTD a lot but I consider it an OTD thing that got out of hand.

At another board I post at, everyone is allowed only one name change (and sometimes they're allowed to change back to their original, but then they can't change again) and you can see their previous username by checking their profile. This might work here.

Ythan, please change my name permanently to WhiskeyClone.
As for these temporary name changes... whatever. I don't really care what happens in OTD; it's kinda meant to be a cesspool of confusion and spite anyway. I think it fits.

Its funny. I would get one, but it seems to be an otd game, and i don't want to infringe on any of there hallowed traditions. It is rather confusing tho, and it would probly be best to change it back after a month or so when everybody gets board with it. I don't like not being able to tell who people are. Its already hard enough to remember most shroomerites, without all the confusion. Or mabey require that they put there original screen names under the new ones?

i think it would be a fairly safe assumption to make that the majority of the users of this site intentionally consume confusion-inducing substances; some even pay a good bit of money for them. so, it seems odd that some of those same people would throw a fit about something as minor as a few name changes.
the name changes are temporarily confusing. much less confusing than life and drugs though and it's a fun puzzle to solve. i see no reason to about the changes.

I think it's all in good fun and has really refreshed thing around here lately. I understand if people don't want their name changed, but if the Admins are willing, why not allow people to have their name changed? I don't see the crisis in all of this. I like my name, and will keep it out of tradition, but the name changes have been a riot (in a good way) in the past couple of weeks.
Kudos to the Admins who are having a fun time and actually enjoying themselves around here!

I simply think that this should have been implemented a long time ago. If Swami was allowed to change his name once a week, no one would have been able to accumulate the offense that they took agansit him.
In other words, no way to hold grudges agansit him for so fucking long, because there wouldn't be a singular, concrete identity to rally agansit!
This all revolves around identity. A certain amount of consistency in identity is required here in order for the boards to function as they are intended to. Personally, I think it should be far more restricted, but I really don't care what happens. Honestly, I think a lot of problems could be solved from losing all identity whatsoever, as the first portion of my post addressed.
Maybe we should all have a number, eh? Then those numbers could randomly change each day through some script. It'd be the same effect, right?
Peace.

I'm willing to compromise.... reinstate Swami and you can change your name as frequently as you wish.
Seriously, though, I couldn't care less whether or not everyone changes their names all the time; I simply just noted that it does make some aspects of the forum experience a little more difficult.
Also, if I ever felt the need to change my name, I'd definitely want that oppurtunity to be available. Actually, the most reasonable compromise that I can envision is to restrict the amount of times one can change one's name within a specific amount of time, say, once every two months, or something to that effect. It might solve the confusion and still give the freedom to change one's name. Eh? Eh?
Peace.

I think it's pretty harmless. I'm sure there are instances where it's confusing, and sure, it can be called childish, but it's fun, so who cares?
To the people who are confused by it or think it's ruining everything, lighten up, and if you're that confused by the name changes, go to the person's profile and figure out who they are. Or, don't read their posts if it's that big of a deal to you
I do agree with the specific instance that was brought up though about the guy who was good at IDing mushrooms being named something ridiculous, I see how that could have a negative effect But it's HIS nick, and HIS choice I guess, so who is anyone else to say he can't change it?
I personally requested mine be changed because after becoming more familiar and comfortable on these boards, I felt that simply "Liz" suits my personality better than ifallapart. I don't care if people know my first name, thus the change.
So yeah, to summarize, people should settle down and know that this will die down eventually anyways, and just DEAL with it.

If Albert Einstein's name was "Lord of Ass To Mouth" would he have been taken any less seriously? It's highly doubtful. How does ones name or in this case username have anything to do with their level of intelligence? Give me a break.. People definitely need to lighten up a bit.
The name changes are fucking hilarious and it doesn't take but 2 clicks to figure out who somebody was before the change.

the name changes are fucking stupid. its really confusing letting everyone just change their name every 10 seconds. it makes the whole board look messy and dumb when u see these users with long ridiculous names. its one thing for someone like fortyounces to change his name to 40oz its a whole different thing to have people named i_love_poo_scat_omg_lol_kekeke ... it might have been a funny gag for a few weeks but i think its time to set things right

I see your point, but if a new member was looking for valuable information on mushroom identification, I'm not sure if they'd be inclined to listen to someone named "My Chin Is A Ball Rest" or whatever it is
And KOTT, yeah, the name's are gross and immature for the most part, but like I said, I'm sure it will die down soon and the novelty will pass. I hope so anyways

some people on this board have absolutely no sense of humor and take themselves way to seriously. If you don't laugh at yourself occasionally you start turning into a fundamentalist.
Thank you Ythan and Xenu for having a sense of humor and helping to keep the shroomery from turning into a boring, dull, and mediocre site.

I don't care what people call themselves really, I just find it confusing, but at the same time, if I don't know who you are, then I guess its like talking to someone new everyday...I could so see myself flaming someone tho and not realizing its someone I know that I otherwise wouldn't flame.

I think the only people that seem to change their names are those that have to out of reputation around the site. Maybe if we had to keep our usernames it would add a little accountability to what we say. Then again, as long as the vets keep their names it isn't all bad.....I want that search tool still

I find it confusing, and think there should be a mouse over function to show their original names, two clicks is too much work. Also to all those who are saying it's "just the internet", yeah, but it's the Shroomery and it's addicting and if I'm going to spend hours and days and weeks in this community, I don't want to be confused all the time. Still, though, I have gotten a few good laughs out of some of these names...

Seriously, though.... if you're upset about SOMEONE ELSE'S screen name on an internet BB, you're pretty fucked. I can't believe how a few name changes rocked some of your worlds.

I thought it was pretty hilarious. I don't know if I would have posted in the name change thread if I wasn't drunk, but it was pretty fun when I did Of course I don't want to be stuck with a name like this forever, but temporarily it is actually kind of refreshing to have a different name. None of the new names really offend me or bother me, it's all in good fun I think. But I can see how it could possibly effect the more serious information sort of forums, if the names were to stay for a very long period of time.

Bad idea but wouldn't it be great to have an anonymous forum or be able to post anon questions, that you don't want tied to your profile, bulk growing of actives, prices. I would love to ask some sensitive questions but not under my profile. What if I became a vendor one day, or a circus clown. They're out there watching us.

If there is a real reason I agree with name changes, but if people just want to change them for no reason; I think it's a pain in the ass and pointless.
