I know this has been brought up before......

....and I know it's probably not going to happen, but I would really love for there to be a sports forum, or at least a subforum somewhere on the shroomery.  Recently there have been leagues formed comprised of all shroomery members for fantasy football, and now fantasy baseball.  We've had threads stickied in the Pub and in OTD for these leagues.  But where so many members are participating in the discussion about different teams, players, trades, transactions, doing some general shit talking during the season, etc., I feel like it would be really helpful in terms of keeping things organized to have it all under one forum. 

I understand that the admins can't grant every "Ohh Oohh Make this a forum too!!11!" request, but there are a lot of people on these boards that enjoy talking about sports, whether it be football, baseball, disc golf, whatever.  I think it would be very worthwhile and would get a lot of traffic :thumbup:

That was my sales pitch.

It would be awesome if this were at least given some serious consideration by the admins. I think this forum would be a lot more popular than some of the forums that we currently have in place, and would really be a nice addition to the site in general.

Definetly. I think we almost NEED a sports forum, because various sports threads are harbouring in the pub, and god knows last nfl season OTD was rife with Steelers threads.

I see no reason we shouldnt have one, and a few we should. Admins, please?

I don't see why the admins are ok with us having a "Great Outdoors" forum, and a Culinary Forum, and other forums that get very little traffic...but a sports forum which is painfully logical to add is not ok?  :confused:

Although I do enjoy lurking those low traffic areas I believe sports would be a fantastic addition to shroomery since it provokes a large interest. I think a lot of people would agree with you

Perhaps you should make a poll in the pub and with enough response, perhaps it will make a stronger persuasion for your case.

It's true, I have absolutely no love for sports, unless I'm playing them myself, on a sunny day with the scent of freshly cut grass in the air.  :tongue2:

In fact, I don't think any of the admins are really involved with watching sports or participating in fantasy leagues - so that's probably why when this idea is suggested, we get the idea "hrmm.. well I don't really know anything about sports, I'll just let someone else field this one who does!"  Of course, when none of us have much of an interest in it, you can see how our logic fails to get anything implemented :wink:

I'd prefer this be a sub-forum, where would you want it placed?  My first suggestion would be OTD, since it seems that's where the majority of the sports-related conversation is taking place to begin with.

Do put it in OTD so that conversation there won't be hampered by silly Pub requirements.

Sports fans are some of the most vile creatures on Earth and they'll need ample room to curse, spit, etc. etc.

I wouldn't mind it being a subforum, but honestly it might be better off as it's own because there are so many subforums that could be OFF of a sports forum, ya know? 

If it has to be a subforum though, I wouldn't care if it was in the pub or OTD.  My only fear is that if it was in OTD it would be moderated as an OTD forum....I don't want random flames and stupid pictures (no offense guys  :wink:)  I'd rather it be serious sports talk...with some shit talking  :smirk: 

Either one though is fine.  :thumbup:

great idea liz!! when will we see this forum???  im tired of talking about sports in the pub and having no one say anything, most people in there dont like sports :frown: and i dont want this in OTD for reasons i dont need to explain... this needs to be its own forum...

I personally think "The great Outdoors" Would be a great subforum of a "Sport" forum.  Hiking/Camping can definitely be classified as a sports.  Just my opinion though...I don't really care too much where the forum ends up, as long as it's there and people post in it  :thumbup:

My suggestion would be OTD, although right now the most sports activity is in fantasy baseball which is pretty Pubber-dominated.

But frankly, sports is a topic that gets people angry - and an OTD subforum for sports would let us really rip into each other.  But we could have rules for it for shock pics and what not..

Would it really be so difficult to create a subforum that exists in both forums and has a balanced set of rules? (i.e. flaming allowed, but flagrant racist comments and shock pics not)

I wouldn't say the admins have been against the sports forum because its about sports, more like we all cringe when we see how many forums we currently have.

You have to understand we constantly get asked for new forums, I'd say an average of 1-2 a month, if we'd be more lenient on this we'd have a message board that would require 2 pages!  :shocked:

Anyhow, I'm a sports fan and I do see there is a lot of support for it, the problem we have is we don't want to create another new forum, so the sub-forum has its merits.

But then again, a new forum might not be a bad idea, have sub-forums for various sports even.

I'd be willing to support a new forum over a sub-forum, at least we can try it and see how it turns out.

Just wanted to jump in here since I had a PM waitin' from Liz and I see Thor is also on board.  At any rate, I am willing to give this idea a go - but as I have friends in town for their Spring Break and won't be around much this week, I am going to wait until next week to put this into effect so that I can be here to put out any fires, should any fires ablaze :grin:

I doubt this will work (the part about existing in both forums), since all sub-forums are listed in our control panel with a single parent forum.  Having two may cause the computers to explode or something :tongue:

Nobody suggested that.  If you interpreted that from my post, then it is more evidence that women are best left out of academia and sports, as they are better suited to homemaking.
I believe you are trying to construct a Potemkin village to obscure the fact that women don't belong in sports.  Mud and jello wrestling are exceptions.

If you don't want a new mod just for the forum I'd be glad to moderate it and I think Stein would be good for the job as well, especially since he was a Fantasy Football participant and is partaking in Fantasy Baseball right now.

Noone's arguing. I'd personally like to have a few mods for the forum, including OMR.  I'm just saying I'd like to mod it as well  :laugh:  I don't think there should be a no flame rule, but like, I don't want people in there attacking other people just for the fuck of it.  If you're flaming someone in regards to the city they're from or the team they cheer for, or just in good nature, that's one thing, but I don't want it to be OTD style where people are attcked for no reason.  I think it should be more context based than anything else as to whether it's appropriate or not.  What do you guys think?

I was going to suggest that too, but that would turn in to about a million different subforums - hockey, golf, football, basketball, etc etc etc...I think it SHOULD be it's own forum, and there can be specific threads for specific things, and maybe some subforums that are specifically grouped off - like maybe winter sports, summer sports? the great outdoors would be a good subforum of the sports forum too.
