planning on growing p.c. b+ on organic millet using quart jars. but i am unsure about the ratio of water to millet. the faq for this site says to add 200g millet and 200g water and a 1/4 tsp of gypsum to each quart.

i would let the jars sit for 24 hours before pressure cooking. but i have done searches around this site and other places and i find the ratios to be much different. what gives? is rye more likely to get contaminated than millet? i thought i remember reading that rye is easily contaminated (in comparison to other things).
planning on doing 12 quart jars- how many cc's per jar of inocculant?
once fully colonized, i'm planning on dumping/crumbling substrate into a cooler (36-48qt probably) and casing with vermiculite on bottom and 50/50+ on top. i'd like to use as much substrate as possible in the cooler- what is the maximum i should use? would this work well?

Make a test batch with diferent amounts of water. Then you will see which water amount will give you a nice shakeable substrate.
The goal is to use as much water possible under the condition that there are only a few exploded kernels and that the substrate remains shakeable.
Rye contaminates easyer due to its (often times high) sporeloads.

Hello.:), this recipie is from a very good and missed person from the old days, ; by Funkyballoon, (Aug.23,1999)
**************************************************************
1. Boil/simmer a certain volume of birdseed with the same volume of water to soak in.
2. Mix boiled birdseed with brown rice flour. 70% birdseed and 30%BRF. No vermiculite. When they're mixed nice and good, add water until everything is nice and moist, but not dripping wet.
3. Put into half-pint jars and tape the holes. Pressure cook for 45 minutes at 15psi
4. Let jars cool to room temp and then inoculate.

I wouldn?t put all of the colonized substrate in 1 fruiting container. If you do this and only 1 jar was contaminated then your whole cooler will be contaminated.
Better make several smaller casings each containing a couple of jars.

I think im going to use millet here soon... It looks like it works really well for people.
In all the teks ive seen, they have not used BRF , except for the one above. Now, you dont need BRF to make the mycelium colonize, because the needed nutrients are in the millet themselfs, correct? Why use BRF...does this just help the mycelium grow faster using more nutrients or what?
I like that tek bluhoney, I think I might try it out...seems pretty easy.
Also last question on the millet... Do you NEED to PC it like it says to do with rye? Ive only got a big pot that i usually use with my BRF and verm, and works great.
Any info would be great...

Using brf works because it is already ground up and the mycelium will take hold faster, easier to digest. Then they will start work on the millet....cheers.

It may work with just boiling the jars in the bot, but you may want to invest in a pressure cooker later on. The BRF does indeed raise the nutrient levels available to the mycelia, and is easy for the mycelia to eat to grow, then it can tackle the millet mixed in with it.as STomas stated. bluhoney

RoadKill, you can use this way either or: cake or casings. But most of your best yields will come from casing's. Im not sure what happened to Funkyballon. bluhoney

I use a similar idea where i use 40% millet 10%brf and 50% verm as the BRF speeds things up - and sticks it all together like a cake.
Millet alone does require pressure cooking - whereas millet powder and exploded millet doesnt seem to contaminate as easily in my experience.
Also by boiling other than exploding the millet, it also gets the weird shit some millet has on its shell that stops mycelia from growing on it

won't adding brf make birdseed clump together, making shaking ineffective. imo shaking = faster colonization

made 5 test jars (quarts)- each with 200g organic millet and 200g, 210g, 220g, 230g, 240g of water. i couldn't find gypsum anywhere, so i had to leave it out. i will pressure cook them all for 1 hour in a little bit. as soon as they are done in the pressure cooker- i will take them out while still very hot and shake them up- then- let them sit overnight. hopefully- this little experiment will help determine what amount of water is best.
