Tumms as Calcium carbonate source?
    #5385341 - 03/10/06 12:19 PM (17 years, 10 months ago)

Tums are 100% Calcium carbonate if you read the back of them. Anyone every try simple crushed Tums as their source to lower ph in peat moss? Please respond with what you think this could be a simple item for ppl to get and is cheap.
Here are the ingredients: Medical ingredients - 1000mg Calcium carbonate Non medical ingredients - adipic acid, corn starch, mineral oil, sodium hexametaphosphate, sucrose, talc.

The cost of a big handfull of tums is the same as a 40 pound bag of high calcium lime, making it several hundred times more expensive.

Tums contains sugar, you don't want sugar in the casing. If use use enough tums in a casing layer to noticably affect the PH, you're also creating a high risk environment for contams.

Spend 5 dollars for a 40 pound bag of calcium and call it a decade.

i have read that crushed coral or aragonite (sold at any marine pet store) or crushed oyster shells are a great slow release form of calcium carbonate and that hydrated lime is a quick fix type of calcium carbonate.
but without a ph probe or ph strips i wouldnt fool around with anything new.

I don't think you want the ph lower since the Ph of peat moss is like 4-5.Go to a pet store in the bird section, they should have crushed oyster shell and in the reptile section they might have calcium carbonate. Its definitly cheaper than tums.

I was thinking the same thing last night when I had heartburn...LOL...The only thing other than sugar in the tums that might cause a problem is the sodium Phosphate. I recall a few years back they began removing phosphate based surfactants from the market because it was causing a very favorable environment for bacterial growth where the sewage was released into the ocean. Bacterial RNA or just RNA in general is linked using phosphate bonds, therfore if you add such chemicals to a uncolonized casing you may be opening up a opportunity for contamination.

or buy cheap coffee grinders from walmart and crushed oystershells - grind about 5lb before burning it out and returning it.

i've never been able to find the oyster shell flour locally. did find a free bag of crushed coral on craiglist though...
