Calcium Carbonate = Tums
    #1984732 - 10/06/03 08:38 PM (13 years, 8 months ago)

My friend is currently making a 50/50 peat/verm casing and was having a little trouble obtaining all of the ingredients. Calcium carbonate was nowhere to be found at the local hardware store and, as a substitute, a few tums were ground up and added to the mix.

The concern comes from the inactive ingredients which are as follows; blue 1 lake, corn starch, 'flavors', red 40 lake, sodium polyphosphorus, sucrose, and talc in that order.

Is there any need to worry about these additional ingredients?

Lime is a lot cheaper. If you want to use Tums, pH to around 8.

I'm sure lime is much cheaper but tums has already been used.

How can you not Find calcium Carbonate?!? Dont look in hardware stores. Do you have any stores that end in "Mart" nearby? (K-mart, Wal-mart-Any other grocery mart) In the household items by the brooms and there is this stuff called "Damp rid" that is pure calcium carbonate. half gallon was a few bucks and they come in little balls (the size of BB's.)

no, no, no please do not use damprid as a source for calcium carbonate as it is calcium chloride. it would be very bad for you and your shrooms.

it does work very well as a dissident but is not meant to be consumed in any way, and if you ate that shroom you are eating what it grows on.

i hope that orizon just got confused as to what you are looking for and did not really use it in this way.

as for the tums, it might work and probably won't hurt anything.

good luck

the 50/50 mix also calls for hydrated lime, where would one obtain this?

Egg Shells = Calcium Carbonate, but you will have to eat quite a few eggs.

Um, the only problem I can see with tums is that it may have to high a concentration of salt. See how much sodium is in one before you use it, salt will dry out and inhibit mushroom growth.

Egg Shells.... Hmmmmmmm So if a recipe called for 1 cup Calcium carbonate then 1 cup crushed egg shells??? I assume one would also nedd to sterilize 1st. Would PC'ing effect the calcium? I suppose one could also use h2o2?

PC should have not effect on the calcium carbonate, just make sure the egg shells are empty, or it will get very messy in your PC
