IMHO, It depends on what the substrate is, the size tray & substrate depth.

If your substrate depth is 3.5 to 4 inches.
I would recommend a casing layer depth of 5/8ths to 1 inch.

1 inch is on the high side.

richardcypher101, I tried to use litmus paper and couldn't get it work well. It kept changing color and it was hard to match the colors. I tried two brands of litmus before I gave up. A pH probe is expensive but a very good investment for growing mushrooms or just about any picky plant. You might also want to get two bottles of calibration buffer fluid sometime. The meter will probably come with a few packs of calibration fluid which is enough for a while, but most meters should be calibrated periodically (about twice a year if you don't use it much or more if you do)

I have had good luck with litmus. I just stuck 3 sticks in my tub in varying places and came back awhile later and let them sit. they were all the same 7.5. I would like to get a probe, but cash is always an issue
