1/2 pint bird seed cakes...Stuff your PC!

Have any of you tried this:
Instead of using quart jars to PC your finch seed, use 1/2 pint jars. That way, you can innoculate much much more substrate at a time. I can fit 21 1/2 pint jars in my PC and only 7 quart jars. Basically the whole inside of the PC would be filled with substrate material. Save time and elecricity. When you birth them you can fruit as cakes or crumble and case. You also wouldn't have to let the mycelium build back up before casing because you wouldn't have to shake the jars to get the seed out. They would just slide out like normal PF cakes and you could gently break them up and case immediately. Also, I don't think they would take very long to colonize. You could innoculate just like you would regular PF style cakes. You would never have to shake the jars to redistribute the mycelium either. Thus cutting even more time off the whole process. Please give some feedback on this because I am thinking of trying this tek soon.
Thanks and take care,

If I stack two 1 pint jars in my PC I can't get the lid on it...But I can get three layers of 1/2 pint jars in there.

bassplayer you must love doing dishes. i don't see the advantage of all those little jars. you would be able to stuff more in your pc --> 21(jars) * 16oz(per pint)=336oz of substrate compared to 7(jars) * 32oz(per qt)=224 oz. but i would rather fire up the pc again. it would be faster than have to innoculating all those little jars. another point of yours that seems imo off, involved not wanting to shake the jars. you totally want to shake the jars because it spreads the mycelium throughout the jar and speeds up colonization greatly. again i would rather shake 7 jars rather than 21. getting the colonized substrate out of a quart is a bit more of a pain. typically done by scrapeing out with a sterile spoon but it doesn't seem to slow casing colonization myc. usually pops through in a couple of days. i do try to fill unused space in pc with used syringes and 1/2pints full of distilled h2o for making new spore syringes. good luck

You would use less spore solution doing quart jars as well. Quarts would colonize faster because you could shake them, the 1/2pints you wouldn't be able to shake (well you could if you cut down the amount of substrate, but that would make it even less worthwhile). In the end I say do what makes you happy.

I guess it probably isn't worth it. It would be more work in the long run. Not enough of a benefit I guess. I just hate seeing all that wasted space in my PC when I use quart jars. Plus, you can't fill quart jars all the way up cause you gotta have room to shake the substrate. So there's not really 1 quart of substarte in each jar. Only about half that. Maybe a little more. Anyway, I was just trying to think of better ways to do stuff. Can't blame me for that.
Anno...
You seem to have a lot of success so I figured it would be in my best interest to basically copy what you do. Could you share your method for preparing your finch seed? Do you steep or soak or rinse or anything like that before you PC it. Also, what ratio seed/water do you find best. I read that you sterilize your casing mix. Do you use jars for that or bags or do you bake it in the oven? I appreciate your help!
Take care,
