what EXACTLY are colonizing jars supposed to smell like? Mine smell sort of "intense", not sweet or sour just semi revolting, is this normal?

they shouldnt smell revolting. They have a really mellow mushroom smell. Its not a bad smell at all.
Sounds like bacteria...can you give a little more description?

I hope you mean what does a "colonized" jar smell like? I don't recommend you try smelling a "colonizing " jar. Contam issue. Usually the only time I smell a "colonizing" jar is when it's sour.

Well, the smell is similar to the smell of the fresh substrate, sort of like cereal, it's just a more pronounced/noticable smell. On second thought, I accually wouldn't call the smell offensive. But, what EXACTLY should they smell like, what is "mushroomy"? Should this mushroomy smell be different from the smell of the fresh unsterilized substrate? Thanks for the info!

My friend uses plastic lids on his jars, and when he opens up his incubator he notices a kind of sweet "warm cereal" type smell. This is normal. If he smells a VERY STRONG sour type smell, it means at least one of his jars is rotten. That type of smell can dominate a room. Sniff the outside of each jar and find the one with the problem. It's pretty easy to tell. Find it and remove it or otherwise it will make all your other jars stink. Peace.

I think i know what you are talking about. Its no big deal, just the substrate. However if they begin to smell bad like your sink, gym shoes, or various other rotten items then it is bacteria.

Yeah,"like a sink". That's a perfect way to decribe it.

Have you ever smelled mushrooms!? Dryed mushrooms kinda have the same smell but in the incubator its a little more sweet or fresh smelling from the ones that you get dryed.

Sour smelling leads me to think something else is growing in there besides mycelium... :/
