I've been using the ol PF cake method since I've started (if it ain't broke don't fix it right) but decided to test out your outdoor cultivation tek just for the hell of it. The thing is - after a little while I noticed something that looked like cob-web mold on the surface, and when I checked it it smelled like wet ass grass that's been sitting around for a couple of days as opposed to the traditional mushroomy scent I'm used to. So I assumed I fucked up and tossed it without even thinking that maybe wet ass grass is supposed to smell like wet ass grass. And it's not like I can do anything to get back the pot I dumped, but for future referrence it would be nice to know if I was on the right track or not. I'd hate to keep tossing good cultures just because I'm not used to a certain method, but I'd also hate wasting a bunch of time nursing some disgusting ass mold that's never gonna do me any good. So in your own experience, how would you compare the actual mycelium growth/smell/look/etc of your tek to that of the PF tek? example: obviously it doesn't turn into a large white clump of fully colonized substrate before it starts fruiting...but are there any other differences that us newbies should be aware of?

The shrooms are probably not that big because its hard to mimic the exact optimal conditions for that strain (equador) of mushroom. When outside, they are probably getting more sunlight than they are supposed to.
Moe, how shady is it where you have your patch. If the picture I saw is your patch it appears to not be a very shady spot.
Also, perhaps that bagged cow manure has too many unwanted chemicals and not enough nutrients? Hmmm.. Perhaps my experiments will be able to answer these questions... ?

the approach i take is high tek / lo tek first i use all the common indoor tek's, then any jars I catch before they turn too green and have to go through the pressure killer are put in the yard in a likely spot sort of my wtf spot. on more than one occasion they have shown that nature doesnt give up as fast as I do. the ones in the yard are always bigger.

Hey there,
Those have that "Let's Go Flying" look since they were done in a more natural way. I am working a compost pile up for a big surprise here one of these days...I peaked underneath the surface and some things I have chunked in there to get rid of have started doing some stuff. Eventually something is going get the right combination and I am going to look in there one day and see a nice surprise...I feel it coming... .
