My kitten opened one of her jars to smell it and it had a sort of sickly sweet smell to it, not unpleasent. That isn't cobweb, is it?

yes. take a bag of coffee and sniff the hell out of it, then stuff your nose into your casing and give it a good whiff. if it smell like rancid, wet ass then be prepared to battle.

How is it the wrong forum? COntams are a natural part of growing. Yes cobweb does have a smell, to me it smells most like fermentation. Kind of like really sweet wine, or bacardi limon. It almost smells good. A normal jar should have an earthy mushroomy kind of smell.

Hmmm...my kittens jar had that sweet smell to it, but she's unwilling to believe that it is only cobweb, since the grayish stuff in the substate is turning more and more white by the day. ?? I'll tell her to isolate the suspicious jars and keep an eye on them just in case.
Um...and for a newbie...what exactly is a 'mushroomy' smell? I've honestly never smelled one.

Uh...have you smelt normal mushrooms? If not, go to the store and whiff a few packs of muchrooms and some portabellas and stuff.
