The Real Green Dragon
    #5279373 - 02/08/06 09:20 PM (17 years, 11 months ago)

Here is probably one of the most exotic plants that grows in new engalnd and elsewhere.  I wanted to share it because i find it quite fascinating and because of its intriguing name.  This plant is on my hunt agenda for this year, i would love to have a specimen in my collection.

Arisaema dracontium
Green dragon
  Araceae

Interesting info

The unusual green dragon has an arc of long leaflets on top of its stem.

The flower looks like a fleshy sheath with a long, protruding "dragon's tongue."

The fruit looks like a stubby corncob with kernels that turn red and orange when mature.

Height: about 1', sometimes taller

Frequency: Found infrequently in both low-lying areas of the woods and in the higher, drier areas.

Blooms: May

Range: Found throughout Indiana and from New England to Minnesota and Kansas and to Florida and Texas.

One of the most interesting facts about this genus of plants is that they are extremely poisonous. No part of the plant should be eaten because of its needle-like calcium oxalate crystals that "will cause severe burns to the mouth and stomach lining.  No smoking this one!

Whoa. I am adding that to my list of top plants to keep my eyes peeled for. Great description...I wonder if this plant would grow in the south east united states very common?? Good for me, because I have lots of places to search for it. I wonder if the crystals used to be gathered, and used in tribal warfare.. Cool plant

Green-Dragon
Author (L.)Schott. Botanical references 43, 200, 274
Family Araceae Genus Arisaema
Synonyms Arum dracontium - L.
Known Hazards warning signThe plant contains calcium oxylate crystals. These cause an extremely unpleasant sensation similar to needles being stuck into the mouth and tongue if they are eaten but they are easily neutralized by thoroughly drying or cooking the plant or by steeping it in water.
Range Eastern N. America - Quebec to Florida, west to Wisconsin, Nebraska and Texas.
Habitat Rich moist woods[222]. Found mainly in wet woods and along the sides of streams, but sometimes also in dry soils[235].
Edibility Rating apple icon 1 (1-5) Medicinal Rating apple icon 1 (1-5)
Physical Characteristics
icon of man icon of perennial/biennial/annual Perennial growing to 0.8m by 0.5m.
It is hardy to zone 4. It is in flower in May. The flowers are dioecious (individual flowers are either male or female, but only one sex is to be found on any one plant so both male and female plants must be grown if seed is required) and are pollinated by Flies. The plant not is self-fertile.

The plant prefers light (sandy) and medium (loamy) soils and requires well-drained soil. The plant prefers acid, neutral and basic (alkaline) soils. It can grow in full shade (deep woodland) semi-shade (light woodland) or no shade. It requires moist soil.
Habitats

Woodland Garden; Dappled Shade; Shady Edge; Deep Shade;
Edible Uses

Edible Parts: Root.

Root. Considered to be edible once it has been dried, aged and elaborately processed[222]. The root contains calcium oxalate crystals - these are destroyed by drying the plant or by thorough cooking[K].
Medicinal Uses

Antiasthmatic; Women's complaints.

The dried and aged root was used by the N. American Indians in the treatment of 'female disorders'[222, 257]. The plant (leaves?) were chewed in the treatment of asthma[213].
Other Uses

None known
Cultivation details

Prefers a cool peaty soil in the bog garden, woodland garden or a sheltered border in semi-shade[90, 134, 200]. Prefers a loamy or peaty soil and will tolerate a sunny position if the soil is moist but not water-logged and the position is not too hot or exposed[1, 200]. Tubers should be planted about 10cm deep[233]. Only plant out full sized tubers and mulch them with organic matter in the winter[200]. Plants need protection from slugs[200]. Most species in this genus are dioecious, but they are sometimes monoecious and can also change sex from year to year.
Propagation

Seed - best sown as soon as it is ripe in a shady position in a cold frame[134]. Stored seed remains viable for at least a year and can be sown in spring in the greenhouse but it will probably require a period of cold stratification. Germination usually takes place in 1 - 6 months at 15?c[134]. When large enough to handle, prick the seedlings out into individual pots and grow them on in light shade in the greenhouse for at least a coupe of years until the corms are more than 20mm in diameter. Plant out into their permanent positions whilst they are dormant. Division of tubers when the plant dies down in late summer.

I'm not much at identifying plants, but based on those pictures and description, I'm pretty positive I've seen them in Illinois.

I wonder where it got the name from?

From what is seems , this is a rare plant. I will not dig it up. I will just enjoy it, in it's natural habitat. Plants like this, and wild ginseng in particular are DISAPPEARING from the wild, due to over hunting/harvest.
Especially since this plant needs a male and female nearby to re-seed.
So please don't dig it, unless there is a shit ton to take.
Good luck guys, I may clip a few leaves and add them to the salad of my enemies be careful!!! But I will test out the burning, on myself, first.
I will report back asap.

I found out that in MA it has threatened status, probably due to habitat loss to 'progress' ie walmart and such cutting into to the habitat to make room for its next superstore.  It now shares many of the legal protections that lady slippers enjoy, which are endangered here.  So yes no digging up this plant.

I wonder if taking a leaf or cutting so that i may root and grow it out would be under thr protection of law and morality?  If i can grow a few i can place the mature plants back into the wild, thus growing its population instead of destroying it.

I would like to know what  major physical difference there is between male and female plants, then i could plant complimentry genders near eachother to help further seed set, this would be very helpful to the population i suspect.  I mean zoos do this kind of thing all the time with animals, maybe one could do it also with threatened and endangered plants to try and bring their population levels back.

This could also have a secondary benefit, if the land a big retail outlet or something wants is populated with plants that the state considers threatened and endangered, could they use that as a basis to prevent them from building?  Slowing down the loss of habitat and perserving forestland?

If you take a cutting from an endangered specie because you want to cultivate it it is nothing to worry about. its not like ripping up peyote cactus with the roots because you want to trip.

But i belive this specie is not the easiest to propagate from cutting but its worth a try.

That sucks! The Earth dragon is getting blown out by the human dragon. That damn exponential equation that keeps getting bigger. I always figured it must have been endangered, because of my long time in the woods, never have I seen the dragon.. And I keep my eyes peeled for those rare plants. I am currently growing some exotic trillium and plan to help propagate extinct species into the wild.
I have planted wild ginseng patches and hope to be planting many more to come.
As far as the practicality of this plant, I can not say. In the end, what does the dragon do? If not for the insight it might provide to the grower, won't it be forever lost to our pavement runways and smoky trails?
Yeah, I'll find it. The dragon will come to those who seek. And so will anything. Yeah, it's time to KNOCK ON THE DOOR>
And when it opens, only we can realize that the woodlands and possibilities they exert, are exactly endless.
